Anybody got a Slow Stick with airlerons?

I am building my second slow stick and I think I would like to make the wing straight(or straighter) and add airlerons. I recall seeing someone else do it, but I couldn't find it.
If anyone has, how did it fly? Better/worse? I like a plane to bank when I turn and I plan on carrying a camera so I think it would be easier to circle a area that I am shooting.

Try running a query on "Boomerace: Father of the SlowStick". If anyone was able to make it work, it was him.

from what I understand, it isnt simply a matter of installing ailerons. You must also brace the wing to prevent it from twisting when you use them.

I have seen 3 people say they did it and it works, I have seen many many more say it didnt work, or it didnt work well enough to leave it installed.

I tried it and saw no advantage, in fact there appeared to be significant disadvantage ranging from additional weight to lack of control authority to reductions in the structural integrity of the wing.

The plane just does not need ailerons. I found much greater gains by stiffening the tail and by increasing the size of the rudder. I also found significant improvement in control response by moving the servos closer to the tail where very short control rods could be used.

Overall, I found that functional ailerons added a large degree of complexity for no measureable gain.

Similarly, I found that flattening the wing's dihedral angles made the plane "twitchy" in the air, and much more susceptible to what amounted to tip stalls. To keep every thing stable with the flattened wing I had to fly at much higher speeds and that had a cost in much reduced battery life. It seemed to wipe out all of the things that I bought a slow stick for in the first place. If you want fast and aerobatic, there are much better platforms available. Slow Sticks seems to be best when flying slow.

And to add insult to injury, it cost me $20 for a new wing just to find all of that out.

Well you sold me! I appreciate the detailed, honest response. On another post someone said they made the tail section out of coroplast. I think this is the corrogated plastic they make cheap signs out of? What new shape would you make the rudder if starting from scratch?

I have a 1/8 in coroplast rudder and tail on my SS. It is much more ridged and many times more durable than the stock foam. No real signifigant weight gain either. I just cut the coroplast using the stock parts as patterns.

I got ailerons, and wouldn't fly with out them, It makes it so much more agile, I can put it in flat spins, and what not, that the normal version can not do, it doesn't roll well, but it does roll, I cut about 1 inch more out than they show as ailerons and they span the full wing. Try it, another wing is only like 20-15 bucks, all my friends slow sticks just can't hang, They all have converted to ailerons, I also have them set up as flaps, very cool I can walk faster than it flys with them down and it makes for 6 inch takeoffs, kinda cool also, It is all about fun, and you know how it flys with nothing on the wings, no ailerons, I think it is time to modify, try something different, you might learn something!!!!

What size ailerons did you cut, the stock size? I think with this kinda airfoil, you will need a ton of movement to kill/add lift to each wing, meaning you'll need a huge aileron to make a effective surface to use as a aileron, I tried a couple of sizes and the bigger the better so far, The Leading edge of my aileron is 1 or 2 inches in front of the ailerons they show to cut out and span the full wingspan,( I am also using 45-60 degrees of throw in the movement of them) I think this also helps in the slow speed flight, as some of the aileron is in the prop wash helping theit effectiveness, but MINE WORK GREAT!!!!!!!!! I just wish this thing flew as well inverted, there is always some drawback to these airfiols, but they fly great as intended!!! Upright and slow. I fly mine inside alot and the added agility is really helpfull avoiding other aircraft and walls.

do a search for "spoilerons" I was reading a thread on this and it worked well for them.
