Giant Slow Stick X2 finally flies, photos and video

The Slow Stick X2 finally flew tonight. Power was provided by an MDS 1.48 with a 16X8 prop. This is a scratch built slow stick scaled up X2.

She flew very well. Extremely over powered though. Took off at idle. Actually idle power was almost too much. Ground roll was about 10 ft with motor at idle. All up weight is well under 10 pounds. wing span is 100".

Expect to have used a very large amount of bandwidth come tomorrow. I've viewed all of the pictures of this . . . thing . . . and am halfway done downloading the video.

Amazing. I have the slightest notion you're somewhat crazy or insane?

Oh yes, and what are the specs. I.E., how did you build it, what is that thing on the tail, what is everything made of, who is your psychiatrist, who makes those huge wheels, and . . . why?!?

Edit: You've got to add sound to that video. Those flyby's are awesome . . . No handlaunch/catch though?

Well, I am glad you guys are finding it interesting! I figured if the Slow Stick is awesome than a Slow Stick X2 has got to be REALLY awesome! It sure is fun to fly, much much slower that how it looks in the videos. My friend and I are laughing tonight. I originally was going to power it with the biggest AXI swinging a 18X10 @3000 AXI and 10 3300 cells. MotoCalc told me the plane was going to fly great at 3000 RPM with a 18X10. I should have believed it. Some how wound up sticking a MDS 1.48 on the nose with a 16X8 I will simply say that this thing is overpowered to the extreme. First flight... My friend went out on the road to watch for cars. I was holding this thing by the tail at idle and it is pulling hard. He gives me the thumbs up so I let go of the tail to do taxi tests. With in 10 ft the thing is airborn (still at idle mind you) and climbing hard! I need to get a take off on video for you guys to believe it. So much for taxi tests this thing is climbing. First impression is that with the stick all of the way to idle I am climbing hard and building speed and altitude. Mind you the motor is only turning around 1500 rpm. I mange to trim the throttle back even more and it stops climbing and accelerating. Gees. Got it trimmed out with a lot of rudder. Flew around for about 15 minutes to get a feel. Landed in the grass field.

Specs:

Wingspan 100"
Weight, under 10 pounds.
wing area 100" X 22" =2200sqin
24 oz tank
1.48 MDS 16X10 prop

Tail and wings are completely removable. Servos are pull/pull embedded into each removable control surface. Center cover of wing is removable for access to fuel, radio. Can slide the wing forward and back as well as main gear and tail wheel just like a regular Slow stick. Put the 2 lbs of fuel directly over CG point. Attached are some photos.

But should use a electric motor instead of gas powered! Will you back to E-power? where we believe E is Electric motor instead of Engine!

Do you agree that?

MDS 1.48? That's a funny looking motor/gearbox combo. What is all that plastic tubing stuff? A liquid cooling sytem maybe? *S* (nice work, a fine looking ship Matt!)

HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! That is so funny to hear how low of a idle that the motor is running. Absolutly awesome stuff! Please share some more videos, I would love to see a takeoff at idle and hover at 1/3 video.
