Part 2?!? Well heck, I never would have thought this thread would get that far...COOL!!

By the way GKN, were you running that EDF-50 motor with A gearing?

No, C gearing, A gearing would be to high of an amp draw. I want to try a D or E gear with 11 and 12in. props mite be interesting, maybe get 9 or 10oz. out of it.

You're right, that's what the control line is made out of , Decron. Looks like I'll have to keep looking for stiffer thread. I did ask at my LHS and sporting good stores for the either Kevlar or Spectra thread, but so far no dice. I'm going to stop by another shop today to a take a look. Thanks for the help and I'll let you know how it goes once I get the PP switched over.

Has anyone tried the twin IPS setup with a Bluecor Mini-VTO? I was looking at the specs on this unit and the power/weight ratio is better than the single motor unit. In particular, I'm looking at the 7.2V Twin C Power System (IPSD-RXC-CS) which can produce up to 267g of thrust. That should make it hover! Let me know what you think.

Good thought. But the Twin IPS is quite a bit heavier than the standard IPS (1.7 oz versus 1.0 oz) and requires a heavier battery (1.5 oz versus .75 oz), so you would want to scale the Mini VTO up to keep the wing loading down. My design goal for VTO-type ships is 2.5 oz/ft2 as a maximum wing loading, and this combination would push the Mini VTO wing loading up to 3.6 oz/ft2.

I ran some quick numbers in my VTO sizing spreadsheet and found that the Twin IPS would work best with a 26" span Bluecore VTO. That would give you a wing area of 450 sq in, a RTF weight of 7.9 oz, and a wing loading of 2.5 oz/ft2. With 267 g (9.5 oz) of thrust, it would hover easily. Note that's about halfway in size between the 20" span Mini VTO and the 30" span VTO, which is what you'd expect (since the EPS-350C in the VTO weighs 2.2 oz). Just scale the VTO or Mini VTO plans to to 26" span and it should work well. Let us know how it works if you do!

Sure, the motor got a little warm, but what fun! It's the torque-rolling king.

Hey guys
I have manually by hand scaled up the VTO. It's the big version and i was wondeering if i could use the current equipment in my e starter on it:
3x naro's
6 ch naro
ics 100
EPS 300 with c gearing and a 10x8 GWS prop
Two cell e tec 1200 lipo
Will this work out well?
Also instead of using depron or FFF, can i use x-acto foam board? It's a foam board sanwiched between two layers of cardboard. will this work out with some wood/carbon strengthing spars?
Will i hover with this setup? (:

you will probably need a D gear and a 12x6 prop to get it to hover. It'll fly w/ your setup, but doubt it will hover. I think the foam board will work if you remove the cardboard.

I have found a major flaw with the VTO. It absolutely ruins the feel for one's other aircraft. I have had to park my other aircraft until the VTO either destroys itself (it has tried, but the thing has so much maneauverability that even I could save it. It has plenty of power for vertical flight..........yuuch, most other planes just don't cut it these days. Did I mention this thing is really great fun........oh, and the secret for truly novice hovering, is dental floss. Stake it to the ground, add power and amaze the world

Cool! Glad to hear you're enjoying it. You know, I'm having the same problem--all my other RC models just pale in comparison in terms of fun factor to the VTO. I even built a new Edge 540 ShockFlyer a few weeks ago with an Axi 2208 brushless, and while I like it a lot, I still like flying the VTO better! For those of us that live for low, slow, wild, and in-your-face kind of flying, the VTO is perfect!

Lovin' the VTO

I've cut down to just two planes. The BL Slow stick and the VTO. Between these two, I can do anything I want. I still want to buy a radio with expo and stuff for the VTO, but I'm doing fine with the cheapie. I mostly fly it now on Kokam 340 2s Lipos. Awesome vertical, and still get 8-10 min flites if I'm careful. This is airframe #6, I think I've finally got exactly what I want. I took one inch off the span, and added two inches to the overall length. I don't use any fuselage below the wing anymore. I mount the servos at the back and use very short open carbon pushrods. My favorite plane!
