Paint not sticking

Hey guys, I was about to layup another wing in my mould but last night I laid up a flat sheet to use for hatches and when I pulled it out of the bag the paint just peeled of in one sheet. Ahhhh!

I am using a 2 pack automotive paint - paraglaze 606- that I left for about 48 hrs before laying the glass and carbon.
Maybe the paint cured too much???

Anyone had a similar problem?
I've now got wing moulds sitting here all painted but I don't want to lay it up until I'm sure it will stick.

Anyone got any ideas?
Help!!!!!

Shane

Yes Shane a common problem the adhesion of well cured 2k paint to epoxy.

Typically a molded wing is laid up within 24hrs - many posts will support this practice.

However i have had success leaving the 2k paint for much longer periods. I thank Chetosmachine for this. He reported success with layup on cured paint by prewiping it with thinners/acetone. This has been a reasonable success for me - I have had one episode of the paint 'frying' as i had rubbed the paint with 000 steel wool as an adhesion promoter.

I have read that 2k paint has a silicone component to promote flow when being sprayed onto a surface. The wiping with thinners removes/disrupts this flow agent.

Commonly there is the practice of applying the veil glass layer if time is short to complete the total layup.

Others spray a secondary coat of paint that doesn't have adhesion problems.

Has a very good paragraph on paint.

ps probably need to start this in it's own thread as this thread is to link to other threads with useful info.

I work with this stuff quite regularly at work. I think it could work as a silicone plug for a mold. What do you guys think?

It's much easier to use something like this. It cures much faster and is pourable, giving you a voidless fill with a flat top.

Smooth-on

Instructional videos on this subject

Hi, I´ve found a couple of very detailed videos about carbon fiber, fiberglass and molding on youtube. They don´t necessarily build model airplane parts but they go through a lot of techniques that might work.

Links:

and

I particularly liked the carbon mods vids because they use the products available in their store, and it seem highly aplicable to making model aircraft parts.

Tell me what you guys think....

There's another US website selling kits as well, www.eastbaycomposites.com. They sell a molding kit and a carbon fiber kit. Never bought one but I like the instructional video.
