New Idea: Composites Fabrication

Forum Name: Composites Fabrication

Topic: Laminates, cores, vaccu bagging, moldes, etc.

Category: General Aircraft

Description: A place to discuss composites; from a newbie's questions to advances molding techniques.

Justification:I know there is a builders thread, but composites are a special (unconventional) building technique. As a result, they are discussed over many threads; high performence, gliders, EDF, etc.

Moderator(s): ????. I dunno. Who wants to do it? I guess I could do it, if noone else wants to. I don't have alot of time, though.

I think the forum is a good idea, just be prepared for lotsa flame-wars..... Everybody has their own idea of what's best when it comes to this kind of building-it's not an exact science for sure.

There is a composites forum on RCUniverse. It's very successful... there are lots of guys doing stuff, obviously at lots of different levels. I think it would be good to add one here.

A composite forum is definitely required as there are so many different methods of fabrication.

In this forum we should consider:

1. balsa shrink covering systems.
2. balsa tissue covering systems.
3. balsa fibreglass covering systems.
4. fiberglass systems using various types of adhesives.
5. paper systems using various adhesives.
6. Card board systems using various adhesives.
7. How many other systems are there? Let's discuss them.

Personally I think this is covered pretty well already in the builders workshop forum . And there is not so much traffic in there that it needs splitting out.

However, it would do no harm to give it a separate forum - except it would split out discussion on other construction techniques like e.g. moulded balsa and ply lay-ups that may be relevant.

I like the builders workshop forum because there is info on ALL construction techniques.

Please don't take this as a vote: Just something to be considered.

I'd be down with a composites forum...its a different enough technique that it needs its own forum.

I think this is the main problem:

As several people I see posting about composite building in the high performance forum do it there because the people doing the same read the posts there and not in the builders workshop forum this problem will remain even with a new forum about composites. Several people just look for some high performance electric threads as this is the only forum I know where several people running F5D, ... are around. If there is a composite thread I read it as well and sometimes post something. But it is something completely diffrent whether you have questions about building a composite scale fuselage or a high performance airframe and there are diffrent groups of people who could answer such questions. A composite forum would just be an additional forum to read which several people would propably not do. I don't have the time to read the whole E-Zone for example. (Perhaps as I prefer to try an idea myself instead of asking first .)
To be honest it is the first time for years that I have found the way further down then "High Performance" in the forums overview.

Just my opinion.

I would love a composites fabrication area--I had high hopes for the Yahoo! Moldmaking forum but there isn't much traffic--

If composites get a forum of their own, I'll read it.

There's 7 yes's; need just 13 more .

To be honest, I got the idea from rcu; I like rcgroups better, but they don't have a forum on it.

I'd love to see this one too. I'm gathering info and supplies to take a stab at bagging a set of wings. It would be nice to have a forum which is for jsut such a question or any question regarding composites.

I'll support it. As mentioned there are other similar groups in existance - yahoo moldmaking & rcu composites. But I always spend time here on ezone & some of the best composites articles Ive seen has occurred here. Go for it & see what develops.

I'm all for encouraging more info on this topic, but why is "the builder's workshop" unsuitable. I think I know the answer - name inappropriate - so would a name change there help (I would think the description of the forum - starts "Discussion of model building techniques, .." would cover it)?

It would be easier than having to sort through info on built-up models; which is far more prolific. Also, people could all come to one place if they want to find information instead of trying to look through the many forums that all have composites scattered through them.
