Piper J-3 Cub as a wireless video camera platform
I've always wanted to do aerial videography and last year made a major purchase on the equipment. I talked to Monte Salot of www.wirelessvideocamera.com and I decided to go with his system because of his extensive background and experience in this field. Sure there are cheaper systems but knew this was the system I wanted to go with after my research.
I do a lot of slope soaring here in the islands so I first thought of using a large sailplane to be the platform for my new wireless video system. I started building a standard size (99 in w.s.) Aquila and was almost done with it when I realized that this would not be an ideal choice. So I decided that I could go with an electric powered airplane that could carry the video system. I figured that with a powered system, I could fly at almost all the areas that I really wanted to get video of and not be grounded if there was no lift. Helicopters was out of the question because of the high start off costs and I didn't know how to fly them any way .So here I am now with a new Piper J-3 Cub ARTF from Black Horse models. It was a good buy from eBay and I plan to convert it to electric. My question is where to mount the video camera. I thought of mounting it on top of the wing or maybe on the side of the fuselage. I do not want to make it a permanent installation so I figure get some suggestions in what to do. I wanted to make it so that I could face the camera toward the front then toward the back if I wanted without too much fanfare. Aloha to all on RCGroups |

Simplest would be to make some sort of clip or clamp to mount it on a wing strut, you could then run the wire down the strut and into the fuse quite easily. Alternatively, mount it on the underside of the wing. Best to avoid the prop arc if possible, to avoid nasty strobing effects.

There is someone on here who recently posted a video of his. It had a pic of his installation which was on a home-made plywood? mount mounted on the vert stab facing forward. It gave a great view of the flight. I'll try to find a link to it for you.
PS..I too have a 86"piper J3 awaiting its maiden. I converted it to electric using an AXI 4120/18 swinging 15x10 APC on 16 2600Nimhs. Good luck with yours! Here it is:http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=214499 DrBill Last edited by DrBill; Apr 18, 2004 at 03:13 PM. Reason: added link |
