Tree

Flew my Spadet LC-40 through a tree. Broke 2 rubber bands and put a small dent in the leading edge of the wing. Balsa? Would have had to use a garbage bag to collect all the pieces.

Thanks Desert flier!

I designed and built it a little by eye or by the TLAR theory (That Looks About Right), but mostly from spad building experience, crunching numbers and using design tools such as wing calculators etc...

If she flies well, I will finish the plans I have started and hopefully get them hosted at www.spadtothebone.com

I think for your plane the normal SPAD definition should be refined to: Superb Plastic Airplane Design.

Good luck withe plane...would love to see some plans!!

SS,
Thanks for the compliment!!

The "Simple" should be taken out of it, for sure. Maybe something like "Scary", "Stressful", "Stretched out" or "Strenuous".

This is not one for a new spad builder to cut his or her teeth on. Not to say it couldn't be done, but I would suggest building a few original spads first, before tackling a build like this.

Main spar failure

Here is a pic of my spad after a mainspar failure Had just been practicing circuits and decided to do a few loops had just completed a few gentle loops and flying level when the wing sparr gave away and the rest is history. the next spar will have fibre glass wraped around the centre join.

Sorry to hear about the mishap. Looks like all the vital equipment is still in good shape.

It's hard to tell from the photo, but did your spars fail by rotating about the center piece of carbon? If so, perhaps using two side-by-side pieces would eliminate the pivot point. For what it's worth...

Good luck.

The spar had doublers glued to the front and back with a spacer glued on the front the carbon rods were used as pins to hold the front of the wing to the fuse. I only used woodwork CA glue and scrathed the varnish to roughen it up mark 2 will have the varnish completly removes and epoxy glue for the jint with fiberglass wraped around the joint. I am a beginer at power flying the most stress comes from landing ( ariving ) not from load in the air. The joint came apart in a previous spin in and I squirted glue into the jount and clamped it this probably was a waRNING sighn that i missed.

Hey Balsa - great design - like the build slideshow too - I'm getting to do my first spad shortly (materials on order) and it was very instructive...
