Is my GWS A-10 with EDF-55 fans too heavy?

I just finished my A-10 with EDF-55 fans and finally had a chance to fly her. The CG is set at 55mm and the AUW is 26 ounces using 8 AA NiMH cells.

My first toss of the plane made a hard belly landing and broke off both nacelles (oops). It came down so fast I thought the horizontal elevator was reversed, but it wasn't.

Well she's ready to fly again with reinforced nacelle mounts and I just wanted to see if any one else had similar experiences and what you did to fix it.

Thanks.

26 oz is kinda heavy. Your AA cells are probably the culprit, but . I flew my A-10 at that weight with two Wattage Powerfans and 6 volt speed 400s on 10 x 1100 Nimh 2/3A cells, which weigh about .7oz apiece or 7.5 oz for a 10 cell pack and if flew alright. Not screaming but it could loop from level flight, climb rate was medium.

When you launch, dial in lots of up trim and give it a good hard toss into the wind. The up trim will help unsure it wants to climb. No girly throws allowed! Run a few steps if you have to. Don't try to climb as soon as you launch, but you don't want to hit the ground either.

Ed, thanks for the input.

I'll definitely dial in a whole bunch more up trim next time.

How much throw would you say your getting on your A-10's horizontal elevator? I wonder if I'm getting enough...

Gws A10

Hi Ed:
I am going to purchase the A-10 kit with the EDF-55 fans(as soon as it's available up here) and need some advice.First, will it fly reasonably well using NiMh cells? If so , which cells do you recommend and how many? I haven't got into Lipoly's yet(budget restraints!) so it has to be NiMh's.The other question is which fans would be best, with the 150 or 300 motors?
Thanks in advance.

i broke the nose off first flight but they glue up easily
because i was a bit nervous about the second launch i used the front undercarriage mount and a part of the front wire leg to form a small hook (the wheels look crap anyway) used a light weight bungee made from a load of 3 inch rubber bands (about 10 feet long on the slack) and used this to speed launch. haven't looked back since and i'm usinga pack of 7 khan cells 1100m ah total weight 24 oz no problems but flies faster than i'dlike

Gordynic,

Which motor and fan combo are you using? I'm using the EDF-55's with the 300 motors and my total weight is 26 ounces with 8 NiMH AA cells.

try to go with Kan cells or something lighter like 3 s lipos. Mine is at 26 oz also, but that is with full retracts, 7 servos and a UBEC onboard.

i'm using the fitted fans and motors, they are i'm sure, 300s and am using kan 1050 flight pack with a kontronic sun 3000 sc hitech feather rx and hi tech hs 55 sevos
all in all it feels a bit heavy and would probably fly better with a lighter airframe but as i said flies really fine
airframe is rather flimsy though and i've had a couple of dings to it.
recently landed (a real greaser) . plane stopped but the engines decided they wanted to keep going. used foaming polyu glue to but join mounts and then heavy duty tissue soaked on pva glue as a bandage doesn't look too pretty butit really does the job without too much increase in weight

Darn Servo,

I noticed you did mention you had CG at 55mm... if the model is feeling sluggish, especially during slow flight/landing, you may be running a bit nose-heavy. Also, I gather from the fact that your model has the newer, heavier EDF55 fans, you may have added some noseweight to compensate; this can also make handling a bit slow to respond. I set my initial CG on the A-10 at 57mm, but now fly at 60mm and it is very responsive. Note I have the EDF50 version and normally fly a bit tail heavy, but from your description, it sounded like the elevator was just not enough, which makes me feel you have it too nose heavy.

Get it repaired, then remove noseweight/clay as much as possible while keeping CG no more than maybe 63mm...that is a guestimate and is as far as I would go personally. The less weight up front, the less mass you have to rotate when using the elevator and more responsive it should be.

Hope this helps and keep us informed.

Also, as mentioned, try a pack similar to the GWS 730mah NIMH...lots lighter than the AA cells.

Good Luck,

Carl

My a-10 is about 19 ounces with a 3 cell TP1900. The nacelles are the original ones for edf 50's. I positioned the new 55's flush with the front of the nacelles which helps the CG a lot. I think the new bat. weighs about 4.25 ounces.

This setup flies really good, but I don't know how long the 300h motors will last. I think the best and lightest setup might be some of the new brushless CD motor conversions, sounds like it would weigh about the same as the 50's but put out the thrust of the 55's.

I just got a new GWS EDF 64 -300H unit in the mail yesterday, bought it off ebay cheap. My question isn't about the fan so much as the motor. What kind of RPM can I expect on a 8 Cell (9.6V) 1100 mAh NiMh pack. They show 6.7 amps and 5.96 oz. of thrust 64 Watts but no RPM's listed.

Is there any replacment brushed motors that can go to say, 30,000 RPM's and not blow up? Something that would fit the GWS EDF unit, or maybe a Wattage Powerfan (have one of those too)

ch2s, he's got a servo for each retract, one to steer the nose wheel, 2 for ailerons and 1 for elevator.

here's the thread. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...to_threadtools

I built mine today. WIth LG and 3 servos , unpainted with 3s 1800 PolyQuest is 17.2 ounces or 500 grams. Prolly add an oz when I paint it.

Anyone got a link to where I can see the naceles mod for reinforcement?

Ive got edf 55 in edf 50 nacelles.

Hoe my edf 55- 150s hold up to 3s....

Well, I had maiden flight #2 finally! This time she had 3s2p 1200 etec lipo's.....

The flight was simply awesome! My only regret is that it took 3 1/2 months to get her out again!
