Boeing 727 Engine No. 2 Question

For those who are more intimate with 727 history, I have a question as to the intake opening of the center engine, No. 2.

While researching TWA 727-100's on www.airliners.net, I came across 2 photos that showed an obvious OVAL opening. One photo was a graveyard TWA in older livery. I've been assuming the opening was round. The plastic model I'm using (Hasegawa kit) is round.

Could older models have been oval and later models changed to round?

On the few times I paid attention to the #2 inlet of the 727's I rode in, the inlets were noticably oval. Can't help with the new/old model question, heaven knows if they were new or old when I flew in them.

I believe the round inlets the #2 engine of 727s is the -100 series (short fuse). The oval inlets were on the -200 and later 727s (long fuse).

At Least We Know the DHL Inlet is ROUND



This is from www.Airliners.Net and all three inlets are round. I found this under "Boeing 727" A search under "Boeing 727-100" shows aircraft with round inletsand many of the aircraft in the 727-200 search results have round inlets. That is not conclusive, however, because in at least one instance I have found the same plane in all three sets of search results.

However, I recall when the 727 first fcame to Buffalo, NY and it seems as if the center engine did have an oval inlet. I think the engines have all been upgraded since for noise reduction as well as efficiency reasons and the newer ones require increased airflow, hence larger inlets.

As a bit of trivia, the 727's came to Buffalo before the 707's did because the runways weren't long [or strong] enough for the 707's.

My dad's a 727 Captain...

He just said "oval on 100's and round on 200's..."

I've got some 727 time too

The 727-100 (short body) had oval inlets on the #2. The -200 (stretched fuselage) all had round inlets. The Stretched -200 had larger engines that the -100, and I believe that was the reason for the change, in addition to the fact that the more air restricted oval inlet had a reputation of causing a few compressor stalls - in other words, an air starved jet. Later "advanced" -200's had larger engines yet, but the revised round inlet remained unchanged.

I've just completed the only 727-100 for GWS, EDF-50s with a round inlet on No. 2 engine inlet. My plastic reference model was a 727-200. I chose the 727-100 for less overall weight and only 68 passenger windows cut from Solite, in a TWA Livery. While only a stand-off scale, some details are nice to maintain.

Based on your outstanding Lear 23, for which I have plans and the Flying Models issue with the construction article, I would love to see at least photos of your 727, and hopefully news of test flights and another construction article for FM.

727-100 PHOTO

Ok, here's my 727-100 with a round inlet on engine no. 2. I still have a few details to add.

45" wing span. Weight as shown, without battery, 9.8oz. With a 2S, 1500 Lipo, the flying weight should be close to 12.5oz.

GWS, EDF 50s, GWS RX and 2 GWS pico servos for aileron and flying stab. Castle Pixi 7-P ESC.

All balsa with solite covering and graphics.
