Why don't we hear much about GWS LPS systems ?

Many fliers are using the GWS IPS A gearbox 5.86/1 ratio. Approx 1 oz. weight.

I was curious why more are not using the LPS C gearbox. LPS RXC-C

Almost the same gearing 6.2/1, but 0.3 ounces lighter (0.7 oz. weight).

Even better, this same gearbox is available with a 4.8V motor (LPS RLC-C), which when propped down will safely run on 7.2 V (2 lipoly) to get significantly more power at approx. 3.5 Amperes max.

Martyn, I'm with you. Just before I graduated from IPS to larger motors, I bought one of the LPS RXC-Cs. In my opinion, it is a much nicer unit than the IPS -- smaller and lighter. I think what happens is that most IPS users get started with a GWS kit that comes with an IPS, and they stick with what they're familiar with. The LPS requires a round mounting stick (dowel) instead of the rectangular stick for the IPS. So that may work against it for those who already have aircraft with rectangular mounting sticks.

Martyn, in your experience (I have none), do you find a difference in durability between the IPS and LPS?

The only weakness of the LPS units (if one could call it a weakness), is that the shaft is more prone not only to bend, but to break if you nose it into the ground in a hard crash. I have extra shafts on hand. I guess that this is the penalty one has to pay to achieve the lighter weight. A propsaver might prevent the problem.

Electrically I have had no problems with them and use them in all my little planes.

Availability is an issue too. I simply haven't seen these except on Nippon Daves site.

Good point !

When they first came out they were well stocked at my local hobby stores, but I suspect because of the lower demand they are not re-inventoried.

I got my latest ones from Zebra Hobby in Calgary Canada.

These are "the best kept secret"

I've been using a 4:1 w/ 7.2v motor in my 3oz 75% scale Tiny X.

Recently i built up a hot wind 18mm x10mm tall stator cdrom motor.
1st one (16t) spun up a 9x7sf @ 3amps.

Second one 14t spins up at 4.3 amps -currently on the plane.

Trying to optimize for 6.6 amp (20c) for kokam 340 2s pack-the final version -12t - 6.1 amps.

This begs the question of durability?
The unit was designed for 20-21 watts-now seeing 40-45. Thus far all well!

Oh yeah. the complete unit-motor/adapter/gearbox/prop/and spinner weigh 32gms compared to the original unit at 27gms.

The IPS's are my favorite motors for the small stuff.

How do the GWS-SF props fit the 2mm LPS shaft? Is there a cheap adapter or sleeve?

Probably due to the same reason you don't see many of the GWS EPS 150 power systems. You wont see much demand until GWS CEO builds kits for the power systems.

Thanks! A buddy wants to duplicate my lightest Mini IFO, but doesn't want to pay for the expensive coreless setup. Oddly enough, the LPS with a 2x340 pack and GWS submicro gear will weigh the same as my coreless drive and 3x250 pack, and thrust will be within an ounce, so he should be happy.

Hi Guys,

This thread is probably dead, but I was wondering if the GWS IPS A (??) would power a 70% scale version of Tom Hunt's Miss Stik? Wing span is about 40" and I am targeting AUW of 10 oz.

Not after 3D performance, rather a nice scale like floating style...

Just about. I am flying a 10oz Eindekker on IPS 'B', 3s etech 450 and 8x6 prop.

The 'A' motor goes perfectly with 7x6 prop on 3s LIPO..

You will not get spectacular performance, but it will fly all right.
