Cold Weather Battery Duration

How much effect does 40-50F weather have on nicads. My 150, 250 GWS packs charge indoors seem to be giving only 1-2 minutes then just wimps out!

cold batt

Just came in from flying this afternoon at 22deg F and I can tell you my NiMH batts are dogs in the cold and last 50% less it seems. The nicads seem only to loose 10 to 20%. I try to keep them in my jacket pocket and keep them warm, crazy flying in 15MPH winds with gusts of 30MPH the Zagi almost stopped at times with the NiMH 1650 8cell but hauled a** with the 1400AE 8cell NiCad. Just an observation as this is my second winter E-Flying and I plan to do it all winter!

I fly frequently in the colder months, lowest temp flown was about 10 degrees F. I keep my extra batteries on the inside of my jacket where they're kept warm.

I have not noticed any deterioration in flight times with any of my Nicads.

Here's what I do to keep batteries warm...get some rice from the grocery store...pour some in a athletic sock...tie the end and place in a microwave for a couple of minutes.

The rice will stay warm for an hour or so. Lay your batteries on the sock. Cheap, reusable, and effective. (works for hands too!)
