Trex 600 / 550 Pro DFC - Discussion, videos, pictures, etc.

There must be hundreds, if not thousands, of us Trex 600 / 550 owners out there, but these doesn't seem to be an active discussion thread for these helis
- so here goes!

There's plenty to discuss
- what about the infamous tail gear stripping?
- which is better - 550 or 600?
- is there any point owning both?
- is it a tank or a wolf in wooly mammoth clothing?

Here are a couple videos from today's flights
- no 3D from me yet!

Trex 600e Pro DFC / Mobius - Different field, Fun Fly with inverted practice (6 min 52 sec)

Trex 600e Pro DFC / Mobius - Fun Fly, and inverted practice (5 min 37 sec)

Feel free to add your own vids & pics!

I have a 550Pro DFC super combo with RJX 600 blades, and the power/weight ratio is not bad and agility is pretty good I guess. I'm experimenting with slower head speeds and will put my 700 105mm tail blades on it & see how it works this month.

I don't have much to compare to, it is the midpoint model between my 500Pro DFC and TT E700. Its a nice reliable sport/3D heli and I'm happy with it. I flew it 7 packs last weekend. Sorry, not too much to say about the 550.

I really like my 600 DFC Pro. Mine started out as the second hand built but un-flown 600EFL Pro 'super combo'. I've upgraded the following:
  • DFC head, swash and main shaft
  • Dual grip tail slider mechanism
  • Performance booster motor mount, main gear and pinion, feathering shaft plus frame stiffener.
  • Scorpion HKIII-4035-530kv motor.
  • Lynx main bearing blocks
  • Trex 700 Pro 105mm tail blades trimmed to 100mm
  • Castle BEC pro running off one of the main flight packs (no Rx battery)

She flies real well. capabilities are way in advance of my skill level.

I did succumb to the tail drive bevel gear stripping problem. More my luck than any great skill I managed to auto it down without any damage. I've now shimmed the tail gears and slotted the frames to tighten up the gear mesh. This along with lower gain on the governor has hopefully solved the problem. I've got ten flights on it since shimming and it has been fine so far.

The only other problem I've had was the one-way bearing coming loose in it's housing causing a loss of drive. I'd recommend anyone that has one to pop out the bearing and use green Loctite to secure it, especially if you are running a high power motor.

As for the 550 vs. 600 debate.. I've never flown the 550 but I'm sure it's a nice flying heli. On the basis that 'bigger flies better' I plumbed for the 600 but I don't suppose there is a great deal between them as other than blade length they are about the same size.

I think I'll definitely look at adding some shims to reduce some of the slope
- I've probably got about 5-10 degrees of slop in the tail if I hold the main gear firm.

I'm a bit wary about elongating the mounts for the tail hold
- just in case it has the opposite of the desired effect
- I guess if you're really careful it could be done safely...

- did you use the KDE support brackets as well?

I just used a micro file to slot the holes. It's really dead simple, you only need about 0.5mm of 'slot'

I don't really see the point of the KDE kit unless just for the 'bling value'. Drilling out the holes, as you have to to fit the KDE brace, probably takes longer than slotting.

I really like mine too - the more I get used to it, the more I enjoy it's performance, smoothness, and stability. It's especially good at handling the Scottish wind! (which was one of my main driving factors for 'going large'!)

Mine started out as a used model on ebay
- so I'm not sure of the exact pedigree!

I was thinking of getting a 550 Electric, and maybe a 600 nitro, as a nice combo
- then, I saw this one on ebay and thought 'why not?', so put in a few bids.
- it came with motor, esc & blades, and some useful spares but no servos, bec, or gryo

I've added Align servos all round
- used servos, but I've since replaced all the gears

For the BEC, I'm using the HobbyKing RotorStar BEC
https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...Regulator.html
- which works pretty well, and had a nice bright low-voltage flashing LED, and plug to disconnect the power.

- and a genuine MicroBeastX, that I'd also got of ebay.

The Rx is a FrSky D8R-II plus, with Telemetry for the Rx Voltage from the BEC, and the BEC LiPo voltage
- with a Telemetry Hub to monitor the main Lipo Voltage (only monitoring 6S currently), and an optical RPM sensor.

My main blades are currently these:
https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...n_Blades_.html
- the genuine Align ones are probably better, being heavier, but are twice the price ....

Tail blades:
http://www.modelhelicopters.co.uk/kb...0-90-size.html
- which look pretty cool

I wonder if there is any difference between HK and Helidirect RJX blades except price (maybe blemished?).

https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...n_Blades_.html

http://www.helidirect.com/600mm-cf-m...ss-p-20534.hdx

I might try a couple pairs of these for my X3

I bought these a couple years ago and tried them on the X3 today and had some bad wobble

The RJX Vector blades that HK has are apparently not b-grade but they don't cost less than they do at Helidirect either. Which is odd because most RJX stuff is around 30% less at HK than elsewhere.

The Trex 550 is essentially a Trex 600CF with the bellcranks removed. This is even more apparent with the beta version.

Note the use of 600 CF parts throughout including the bearing blocks which have more widely spaced screws and a key tab as well as the anti rotation bracket and plastic bottom plate. The only "original" part I can spot is the rudder servo tray which is blue anodized interestingly. (battery tray for the 550 has always been the 600CF tray with two screw holes left unused btw)

Here is the 600 CF for comparison:

Speaking of beta helicopters last year some guy on the large heli forum showed up with what I suspect was a beta Trex 500 that he got second hand from someone else. It looked like a Trex 500 and was all Align parts but had a bunch of odd differences.

On mine the painting is slightly smeared by about 0.5-1.0mm
- hard to see unless you look for it...
- can't see any other blemishes

Looks to be worth a try...

Too cheap to be any good, then!

The HK ones are $36.30 and the heli direct $75.99

Here's some pictures of my 600 taken at the field today:

Video is uploading as I type, but don't get your hopes up for any great show of skill, I'm happy if the flight ends with the heli in one piece

Looks neat!
- not using a separate BEC LiPo frees up a lot of space...

Which magnet canopy mounts are you using?

Just saw the video
- I think I might try some of those super-extended loops next time I'm out!

I see you're getting some nicer weather up there!
