~1/9th scale Piper Cherokee aileron trainer
I just completed the a prototype for a piper cherokee at about 1/10 scale.
wingspan = 1 meter
root = 24 mm
chord = 170 mm
constat for entire span
weighs in at 409 grams ready to fly (no battery) or about 14.5 ounces.
AXI 2208 34 and 10 by 6 propellor
4 channel with speed control
and is very fast, at least for me. I built it because I wanted an alieron trainer as an intermediate step to flying a afr spitfire that I keep crashing.

I've been looking into buying a piper cherokee, but have yet to find one anywere. I have a piper cub, and the lower wing cherokee would be right in line with my hanger.
I'd like to see the plane fly (perhaps a video) and read a review on the build up. Any plans in the future???

Very nice Stone! My first aileron r/c aircraft was a Flitecraft Piper
Arrow III. It flew GREAT! It was a gasser with a .25 motor, but
loads of fun. Tons of power.
Your's looks really cool. I hope you have a great time with it.

Just trying to find someone with a camera. Had a small flight the other day. Seems the glide in ground effects is better then I anticipated. ie. prop meets chain link fence. Minimal damage to plane. This depron stuff is much tougher then the stuff they use on the gws planes. I think if i'd hit the fence with one of those I may have strained it.

I am going to build another from what I have learned thus far. It should weigh less and look a bit better cause there will be much less glue involved and I'll probably use epoxy instead of my prototyping hot glue gun.
If some one has line drawings that include a front view I'd appreciate it. This is what I have been working from.

Results of test flights
The wind was variable but fairly gusty due to thermal activitiy but not enough to deter my test pilot from doing a nice demonstration with his 3DX and my multiplex Pico Cub had no problems penetrating either.
Loaded up the cherokee with 8 1100ma nimh batteries and... contact.
We launched from a slightly soggy baseball diamond and the plane ate up an entire baseline to get off the ground, granted the wind was a bit cross. Just before the grass some up elevator was applied and the little guy rose gently but steadily to about 50 feet and about 300 ft downrange where the pilot initiated a left trun and kept climbing to about 70 feet.
Not bad and it's scarry how much it looks like the real thing in flight. This first flight consitsted of about 5 circuits around the flying field with lots of throttle. Plane landed safely but not much roll out because of the wet field but nothing broken. Success!
I got to fly next and the take off was the same but I realized there wasn't much battery left so I just landed instead of making a low turn. Flight two a success too.
The last flight of the day we experienced a total power out on our base leg turn and she just rolled over and went straight in.
Damage as shown in the photo is only to the front. The wings are still solidly attached to what's left of the fuselage.
Too much throttle was needed to fly.
The plane, once trimmed out flew very scale and can't be considered aereobatic...yet.
It's still too heavy.
More elevator needed. Full up was needed to liftoff and climb.
More aleron needed, truns were nice and smooth but the roll rate seems a little slow, well at least for m;y test pilot.
Rudder is sufficient for good ground handeling and seems to be ok in flight.
The landing gear are bullet proof!
Doesn't climb as well as I would like.
I am not going to bother rebuilding the crashed fuselage, I am going to build a new one according to my latest kit plans. Its a little sleeker and should weigh considerabley less. This should help in the area of thrust and lift. Thrust due to smaller frontal area and lift due to increased wing area.
The new elevator will eat into the horizontal stab so I get more control surface without giving up any on the scale profile.
The new horizontal will have a greater incidence angle to see if that's why there isn't enough lift and seemingly little elevator.
The nose gear will be upgraded in terms of wire guage and lenght. I want to run at least a 10" prop on the axi.
When do you consider your prototype complete.
Lastly, as the photo shows we lost our test pilot, I guess he figgured the risks too great. On the other hand we got a new one with lots of experience. I'm just worried about his health, he seems a little yellow.
