Question
F86 in Minnesota

The story goes like this ...
as a kid on the farm in s.e. mn we heard the few occasional sonic booms
this was in the early to late 60s
I was young but still had chores and a BB gun...
one of the Jobs I was to do was kill /trap some of the Rats that plagued the
chicken coup ... a not so small building that housed the couple of horses we had and
a few chickens ... now we had one of the tallest silos in the county and
it had stark white lip around the top ...
we had seen more than a few f86 jets come from west to east
at moderately low level swing around and head N.E. from our general area...

now that day( spring 66 perhaps )
I had decided to stake out the roof of the coup and shoot rats as they tried to go from the
small hog feeder building to the east of the chicken coup into the coup as the day got hot...
so sitting quiet I see movement but then nothing............
but I can hear /feel a rumble ...turning around I see a large spec E.S.E of me
coming fast .......

OMG its tree top level I see it thru the trees on our property line
I move to the very top of the coup ...its coming right at me !!!
It dips in near wing I can see a guy wearing what looks like a hose into a helmet
( I had no idea pilots wore those back then)

I was so excited I lifted my BB gun over my head and started to jump up and down
and wave ......
I saw that he saw me as his head moved just a bit to his left as he flew by...
he could not have been more than 80 yards perhaps 50 as he flew by
and so low that his left wing passed behind the Silo from my point of view
15ft+ up on the chicken coup roof
I was so wound up I tossed the gun in to the weeds and jumped from the low edge of the
coup ( first time ever ) down and ran to tell mom.............
who asked me why the heck was I up on the roof in the first place..............................(moms everywhere )

any way it was My high point of the summer but nobody else
really seemed to care ( guess you had to be there)
as a side note my father had his wings from WWII but had not flow in any action
as he went to Germany he was re assigned to intelligent services...
but he said he never knew anyone left in the service at that time...??

as a second aside now ... I have been looking for the base or station that
the jet would have come from... according to MINN - ANG they never flew
the f-86... so as I have a skyblazers 64 mm df and am looking to repaint it
I was trying to get any info as to who was flying f86 jets in SE mn
during those years................... any thoughts????
how do I find the Base ? if it was not Mn Air Nat. Guard who ..............what paint and markings do I give it :0

P.S. I always wondered what he told his buddy he saw on that cross country trip ?
Im guessing they were training trips or some such as they were a few that flew by the farm back then.

Had a similar experience except with a C-130. So cool.

"High Flight"
"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God."

Pilot Officer Gillespie Magee Jr (American)
No 412 squadron, RCAF
Killed 11 December 1941
