Yet Another GWS 109..

Took the bits out of my old 109 and moved them into a new home.

It was my first attempt at 'glassing'.. I can do better next time... but over all im happy with how it turned out.

Great Looking plane Have you had a chance to fly her, and if so how do you like the way she looks in the air.

I've only had a chance to fly her once.. but it was a huge improvement over the old body/paint I had. Easier to tell orientation over the old all blue and grey.

Very good! you know your 109's..

I modeled her after the semi-famous 'Black 6' (airframe No 10639) that was part of the 77th Fighter Group (III JG77) in Libya. 'Black 6' was captured by the British and used to evaluate new allied fighters. In the 1990's she was restored and spent 7 years flying air shows as the only original Benz engined BF109G-2. She now spends her time in the "Milestones of Flight" at the RAF museum.

Here she is right after capture..

Some pictures of 'Black 6' at airshows..

And the crash that ended her flying carrier in 1997..

In truth, this is the picture that made me go 'Hey! that's how I land.. I should paint my 109 like that'

Here are a few more of my 'Black 6'..

I fiberglassed it with .5oz fiberglass cloth and Minwax Polycrylic. The paints are your standard Wal-Mart $0.80 water based acrylic paint. I used my el'cheepo airbrush w/canned air for the sand and gray color and a foam brush for the white and yellow bits (el'cheepo airbrush died ). I used blue painters tape to mask off the sections while painting.

Then I used a 'fine' sharpie marker and charcoal pencils (white and black) to add the lines on the wing and fuse.

The Decals are mostly from the GWS Kit but I made a few from Avery full sheet labels and my inkjet (sealed then cutout). Then I covered it again with a light coat of sealant to lock in the charcoal colors.

Nice! I'll probably start a TM next week . Did you use the Slope kit or paint over the yellow? Also, what did you use for the wing supports and wire? (I haven't ventured much into the tiger moth build threads.. I don't have a month to spend reading )

TL,

I bought some balsa wood that matched the same width of the wing struts and just ca'ed them to the stock strut...

For the flying wires, I just used 100% polyester thread...

I used the balsa wood mod for the servos also instead of the double sided tape...makes thing a little more dependable..

For more scale like mods:

1. I used some scrap foam from the kit to make the little doors that inclose the cockpit sides a bit.

2. I got some new wire and bent up new landing gear and added the "V" to add scale shocks....I did this by pulling rubber bands through small drinking straws and running them from the "V" down to the wheels...

3. Added the instrument panel by printing it out off the net and scaling the image down a bit to fit.

4. I hinged the control surfaces by using some clear plastic, (Makes for a more scale look without the old tape method)...after reading about using old floppy disk material, I will do that next time and on the Spitfire.

5. I also got the windshield pattern off the net and used it as a template to cut out the clear plastic material.

Used foam safe CA for everything except 5 min epoxy to attach the struts to the wings.

Here's a link to where I went for all the best mods:

Good Luck !

If you get stuck or have any questions, message me !
