Sky Scooter Pro - what gearbox, prop, etc?

Whats up guys!

Just did a search for the SS Pro and came up with all kinds of info. Ive been flying for many, many years now and the SS is actually owned by a young guy Im working with. I sold it to him through my shop where Ive sold nearly 2 dozen SS Pros (Cant be the value for $159!). Many times, the owners come back and want more power/performance. My answer was always to use the MPI metal gearbxo for $19 which gave 3 ratios - 2:1, 2.5:1 and 3:1. Then, I told them to use the 8x6 slow fly prop with 2.5:1 or the 9x6 slow fly with the 3:1 gearing for even longer duration....

Looks like I was right on! All the consensus here seems to lean toward the 3:1 gearings and 9x6 slow fly props. Good to know I hit the mark with my suggestions!

We've flown his stock SS Pro a few flights now. Cant get much more than 4 minutes out of the 600 mah pack even when we use his new AC/DC peak charger. But, thats exaclty all I told him we'd get! Since he's still learning, that isnt quite enough time to get all the valueable stick time in that hed like.

So guys, what is the best gearing? Should we go with the 3:1 and thew 9 inch prop, or 2.5:1 with the 8? We're going to order him some 8 cell 1650 Sanyo NiMH packs next. And until he has landings down well (To save the poor props and gearbox!) I told him he has to fly it stock but we can add the larger pack and extra cooling for now.

On top of that, how many more of you guys have done the flat bottom wing mod? Is it a very highly recomended upgrade? Thanks guys!

Best gearbox for Scooter is on www.servocity.com
Its the open gb I think with ball bearings. 3 to 1 is the way to
go for scooters. I have flown with the gb but I like direct drive
much better. The 8 cell 1650 mah nimh is the correct battery.
Check with Dauntae as far as flat bottom wing. I think he added
a few spars and just taped the bottom flat. If direct drive and you
add the flat bottom, get the carbon fiber zagi props and use them.
That plane will do some serious zinging around for a speed 400.
Even better performance? Throw in a brushless motor.

Sound like you are leading this young man in the right direction. 3:1 open ball bearing gearbox, 9x6 slow flyer prop & 1650 mah battery should give you slower more powerful flight and flight times of 10-12 min depending on elevation and wind. The big prop will also slow the landing speed down.

We are in agreement. 3:1 and 9X6 and 1600 NiMh. Great combo. Learning Lots!

Forgot to mention,

With this combo, the plane is slower, but has more power -- perfect for learning. You must turn the engine off, before landing or you'll break the 9X6 prop. Since the SS Pro glides so nice and slow (relatively), this isn't a problem. The plane seems to glide really well, with no bad tendencies.

rclark, your next plane should be either a T-52 ($35 kit) or a
Push-E-Cat. If you like the scooter, then you'll love these two!
The T-52 glides a lot better than the scooter. Huge 52" wingspan
that has a chord of around 7". Thats over 350 square inches of
wing area. Plus, you can bash the thing into anything and it will not break!!! Believe me, you should see what I've done to mine!!!
