Fat Free Taco - Low Carb Taco?

Hey guys-

Myself and Paul Swanson and a few others are working on getting the Taco to fly on electrons..

I'll be the first to admit I don't have the knowledge at this point to assemble a PROPER epackage for these birds on my own.. So I/We need a little help..

First.. The specs..

Wing Span: 36"
Weight: aiming for no more than 24oz (depending on motor/batt)
Wing Area: 450 Sq. In.
Wing Load: 12.8 Oz / Sq. Ft.
Radio Gear: 4 - 5 Channel Radio, 5 micro servos

The nitro version weighs ~2.5-3lbs with a .25bb.. We're looking at a 16oz airframe with 2 HS81's and 2 HS60's and 555rx... no motor or battery..

There should be one flying soon on an Aveox 27/26/2, MEC gb, and PHX-45 on a 5S 1900-2200mA-h Li-poly.. So that will give us a starting point..

We're tinkering with the idea of an AXI or maybe a Mega.. Sure would be nice to keep it to 3 cells, but that might just not happen..

Anyway, we welcome any and all comments!

Hey cool... Thanks for getting this thread going Jeff!!

Boy I tell you it's a sea of options out there.... I want to come up with something that gives this bird about a 2:1 thrust ratio... but I want it to be afordable to the masses too...

I'm having trouble finding anything on how to actually size an electric motor and battery for a 3d bird... I'm hoping this is the place...

Here's what I'm thinking about using:

280824 AXI brushless motor
CC 25 ESC
2100 mAh 3 cell LiPo pack

AUW target: 22 oz.

Hmmm, wanting it around 24 oz, I dont see anything but a DD. Of course a 22/20/2 in an MEC would rock on this. I have thought about trying it on the Mini3D. I like the quiteness of DD, but it is hard to beat the geared workhorse of a geared motor.

Mike-

The 22/20/2 was a thought... See, what I am thinking is, if this plane performs as well as it does at 48oz (3lbs nitro setup) then there is alot of room to work with, as long as the power system viable for the power output we're looking for would work..

However, I think both Paul and I would like to keep the $300 dollar battery packs out of the equation for this one.

Mega 1615/4 turn with a 3.3 gear box swinging a ?
I have tried a 14x9.5 folder and it picked up my bat 3D ( heavy!! See avitar ) with a 10 cell kan 950 pack. Only flew for 4 min's and dont know the weight but it HAD to be close to 2 lbs !!!!!!

A 3s2p kok 1500 ($100) would work great! Probly have to find a apc-e prop in the 14 to 15 range that would work. The best part is it would only be about 20 to 25 amps and 50 ish oz of thrust.

This one sure sounds good to me! Oh, I guess it should...it's mine that you're referring to.

Actually, I'm still undecided about whether it will be a 4S or 5S system. My goal is to have it ~40 oz RTF (same as a light glow version)with ~350W on tap. It's in the final assembly stages and looks good on weight, so far. Covered weight with gb mount and w/o LG, radio, or power system is ~14 oz. Only mods so far are a more forward mount for motor/gb and, since the battery can go right behind the gb if need be, moved the tail servos to the rear fuselage.

This certainly isn't the most economical approach, but it should be fun!

Yeh, well when you let me fly yours, I'll make a decision!

Did you do any "swiss cheesing" to the motor mount?

You could actually run it on a 3S2P TP or Tanics (two 3S packs paralleled) as it is only going to pull about 30 amps. So...150 for the batteries The Mega 22/20 should give you 2:1 as Motocalc predicts.

Nope. I actually added ~0.5 oz to it to provide a secure (I hope) mount for the MEC gb. I was afraid to do a bunch of lightening on it, given the torque and gyroscopic forces that large prop/deeply geared electric systems produce. I think that many folks are realizing that, while electric systems dramatically reduce vibration and shock loadings, the large prop systems many are running create equally destructive torque and gyroscopic loads. I've had one power system rip out of its mount during a snap and would prefer not to repeat that experience.

I did a little "swiss cheesing" to my motor mount last night... Weight savings was a little disapointing... Only saved 1/4 ounce... Oh well.... We did a little lightening on the rest of the air frame... We removed a total of 1 oz. This Taco is ready to cover. Motor system is still up in the air so to speak...

Paul,
That was the realization I came to when I considered lightening the motor mount...a total redesign was the only way I could see to come up with significant weight savings without compromising structural integrity. I've come to like that heavy ply mount as I consider the loadings that will be placed on it in flight.
