TOG,

You know me, I would have just added non-functional wheels and pants just for show. In fact, I would have made them from solid EPP or sandwitched Bluecor and just carved the shape.

Gene, we are bound by no more than a 250 size motor, which now is suspect because of my J250, weight, no more than 10oz and speed which is a judgement call. My fun jet with inlet is way to fast for the powers that be at top end but they do let me demo from time to time. The majority fly butterfly types and slower aircraft. Dick Sarpolis showed up with a 350 size once and he was aloud to demo once. I showed up with a pattern IPS twin thingie and also the funjet EDF75, same demo. Leon Shulman showed up with a Geebee flying wing from the indoor thread, demo. Vary speed sensitive. Now they do let GWS moth's and planes like my spit and hellcat fly there but in the far end. Problem is thats where the navy stores things in that end so you need to fly around trucks crates and such. I'm not knocking the rules, its that if you don't fly walking pace slow stuff they try to make it hard on you. You should have seen the eye's bug when I kicked the Bird Dog in high gear with the J250 on it.

Remember we're talking a 200' wide x 800' long x 196' tall inside building.

TOG,

I forget... did you setup that Bird Dog with direct drive J-250 or with a gearbox ?

Alright, I'm going to gut my Zagi FIXX and build something else to fly. I'm not sure what the drive system would be called, a GWS IPS? Does anyone know what it's called?

Would the Bird Dog be appropriate for this power system? If so is the 8 cell 370mAh NiMH battery used on the FIXX okay as well?

If the Bird Dog's not appropriate do you have any suggestions about what would be?

Thanks, Mike

Yes, Mike, It would be fine. I believe the Fixx comes with An IPS-2S (3.5:1) gearmotor, but not sure what prop. I would run an 8x4.3 or 7x6 prop, my self. The battery pack should be fine as well.

TOG:

The pest again, I don't recall seeing any throw numbers for crash and burners like me, you are right they,BDs are tough. I am amazed at how tough the IPS is, I have pronged straight in 6 times now and only warped a prop. The BD didn't fare as well, it cracked right thru the lg slot, repaired that and it cracked just behind the aft end of the motor stick. I am gluing one up now that will fix that problem. I also have never seen anything on washout, do you use it? If so how much and whats the r/e throws?

Thanks again, George -- PS -- I'm not crashing to show people how tough your designs are , it just happens.

Guys,

I fly my Bird Dog with a 6 cell 500 mAh NiMh pack and an IPS motor and it is barely enough. I don't think a 340 mAh pack will last more than 3 minutes especially if it's an 8 cell.

The walking plane is called a Bird Dog...

On another note... I just fried my first J-250. The one I placed on my Bipe with GWS 100 gearbox and 11x8 prop. I first flew about 5 minutes on Saturday, today I got home early and there was NO WIND so I had a chance to fly for about 45 minutes. So I took off and was having fun then after about 5 minutes the speed control shut down the motor. I thought something wasn't right cause the 2 cell, 2 Ah Lipo should last about 30 minutes on this baby. I approached the plane and slowly gave it throttle but the ESC cut if off again. I swapped batteries and the same thing happened so I went back to the shop and tried a regular EPS-350 which ran fine. I placed the 350 on the Bipe and ran back out to the field. Flew over 30 minutes, in fact, my hands were hurting from the cold ( about 32 or less ) at the end but I wanted to run down the Lipo just to see how much flight time I could squeeze out. OK, so later did some static tests and the motor would turn but at a relatively slow speed so I popped it open and found the copper contacts ( don't recall the technical name ) were black although the brushes seemed OK as far as integrity. I polished the contacts and reassembled the motor and it still turned slow.

I had placed a drop of silicone on each bushing when I placed it in the gearbox. The other thing is that I only used one 0.1uF cap between the contacts. I'm not sure if the silicone or the lack of case connected caps was the problem so on the new one I'm not gonna oil it and have already attached three caps.

Finally, I think the EPS-350 D gearbox has more power than the J-250 in the 100 gearbox ( don't recall the ratio. ) As soon as I went back to the field I could do unlimited vertical climbs with the Bipe for the first 20 minutes. I recall with the J-250 I barely was able to climb vertical.

KC9: I'd be real interested to know the ratio of the box you were using. For an 11x8, I hope it was a 'D'. If it was a 'C', 10x8 is the largest I'd go on 2S packs. From the sounds of the shape of the commutator, you were pulling some serious amps.

I guess thats why you guys buy them 20 at a time?

I am sorry
But i am still having trouble envisioning them lasting more than a few flights
