Can someone please help me out

Well I purchased a Turbo Hawk a while back and now im ready to put the kit together. I am very intrested in using LIPO batteries instead of the the regular batteries that I have been using for years. I have no clue where the best place to purchase these batteries and charger from? If somoene could get me started in the right direction that would be great. The type of motor that came with this plane is a type 400 motor with a ducted fan unit. I also purchased a pico reciever to cut down on weight but I have no transmitter to run with it. Does anyone know what transmitters work with pico recievers??? ONe more question ----> What type of esc should I get. I have no clue about amps and volts whne applying it to this. All help is appreciate thanks.

for a start. Usd both, reliable and cost effective both.

Speed 400 is generally in the 10A region, which is pushing e-tech 1200' too hard, but is just about acceptable for Irate 1100's I am not familiar wih the model layout, so more than that I can't say. Make sure that whatever packs youuse will do 10-12A tho, and will actually fti in the model. Lipo cels are bot cylinders that are large and very thin. Read up everything on safety aspects too and chargers.

Any transmitter with the right shift will work with a pico receiver if on the correct channel. However small receivers are almost all comprmised in performance in someway, so be cereful what you use and where you fly. You may get more interference than you would normally expect.

If you have no clue about amps and volts, and no experience with Li-poly, it would be helpful for you to read the sticky entitled Ultimate Guide to Lithium Polymer Batteries at the top of the Batteries and Chargers forum. Li-poly cells are more susceptible to damage than NiCd or NiMH, and require special care and treatment to avoid starting fires. They can be relatively safe when used properly, but first must be thoroughly understood.

You may have problems obtaining the correct cg with LiPo cells as they are much lighter. If the design of your plane does not allow moving the batteries forward a good distance from where they are now located, it could be a problem requiring adding nose weight to get the cg correct. That's assuming they have the batteries in a position other than on the cg.
The Turbo Hawk uses a 10 cell 5/4AAA pack which weighs 5+ oz. A 3 cell IRate 1100 Lipo weighs about 2.5oz. What you can do is build the plane and then use fishing sinkers in place of the batteries to find out if you have cg problems,

I dunno WHich one I would need if I went with a 3 cel LIPO battery pack. When purchasing a LIthium battery pack how do I know hweither to choose one that is 250mAh 700mAh or higher??? Usually how long it generally takes to charge a LIPO battery pack??

For a speed 400 motor, would this http://www.aircraft-world.com/shopexd.asp?id=1991 Jeti Micro ESC running 12 to 15 amps work for me or do I need less or more???

Hi,

Again, the advice to read the sticky is paramount!

You need to understand that batteries are charged in multiples of their capacity e.g. a battery that has a 700ma hr capacity will be charged at '1C' when it is charge at 700ma, or '2C' when it is charged at 1400ma.

Different batteries of different types can be charged at varying 'C' ratings e.g. Ni-Cd (typically) can be charged at 3C - 4C. Li-Po are (currently) charged at 1C.

At 1C a battery with take 1hr ('coz the battery capacity is specified as xxx ma per hr e.g. 700ma battery actually mean 700ma for 1 hr), 2C = 30mins etc.

Clear as mud?
