My Zoom 400 Mods

Not that the stock setup is bad. In fact as Boyd said for what is is out of the box, it is in its own class

Keeping the stock motor till it goes I figured I would add a heatsink since it gets pretty hot even on 4-5 minute hops.

This is a trimmed GWS S400 mount with one tab removed and then cutoff just behind the other.

The Fins are by MJP Carbon (thanks B) and really wake the looks up.

I have had no problem with the antenna being wrapped around the boom with the SC Cirrus RX, GWS Xtal.

In this picture (you can see it above too) you can see the skids have been widened just a little. Simply used a heatgun and spread them with my fingers after making a tracing of the stock spread. I removed the skids from the struts and reveresed them since they have a small screw holding them upright. They line up nice I think.

Sweet! Gonna try your landing skid mod!

Working on my own zoom mod as well, a tail mounted tail servo mount and a new gyro mount on the boom. I find it quite difficult to adjust the gain on my GY240 on the stock mounting position. Hopefully it won't be too tail heavy. Tried mounting the gyro on the receiver platform, works great but just though I try something else.

Cheers,

Alvin

Oh, I also soldered the ESC to the motor and changed the connector to a Deans, elimnating the 2 BEC plugs and 4 inches of wire.

With that and the Heatsink the motor stays much cooler.

Very nice Fred, The landing gear looks so much better, has to be less "tippy" as well. I'm keeping a close eye on this heli, may be my first jump into CP. So, is it powered by a speed 400?

Yes it is S400 stock. Power seems pretty good.

One thing I'm curious about with this ship is the pinion on the motor. It looks like it is both driving the main gear for the head, and a crown gear for the tail. Are there any mesh problems with this kind of an arrangement?

There has been some wear problems with the stock setup - mine has been run very little and shows a good deal of wear already (been flying with homemade blades - wish me luck). I am hoping once they wear in a bit they settle in and and last a while. I checked the mesh on mine and it was a bit off - adjusted it so hope it works better.

(not meanign to hijack the thread)
Another thing to watch out for is the blade grip tie-bar (at least that is what I call it - Item M003 on the exploded view with the heli). I had a very slight tip over on my first flight - broke one blade and chipped the other - and this piece bent. I have managed to straighten it and all is better, but it is a pretty soft piece. Looking to fab a stainless or titanium replacement next week.

FWIW - I am running HS55's all the way around. The tail position it just drops in. The aileron and elevator cyclic servos I added some 1/8" basswood strips to raide the servos up a bit and the pitch servo I added about 1/4" blocks to the HS55 to position it correctly. Not the best situation, but it works until i can get my mitts on some HS56s.
