I just conducted an interesting experiment...I compared my CD Rom motor (picture in previous thread) to my PJS550, using the same battery, controller, prop and setup.....the results are interesting.

PJS550
1:1 gearing
Etec 1200 3s
Phoenix10
APC 10x4.7 prop
5370 rpm
10.1 A
Cost $90.00

Cd rom motor
5:1 gear reduction
Etec 1200 3s
Phoenix10
APC 10x4.7 prop
5310 rpm

Cost $freebie

60 less rpm but 40% less current!

It seems to me that the PJS 550 should be putting out more rpm's than listed at full-bore throttle on a 3s pack. Didn't Eric run a static test on the 550 at one point that showed much higher rpm's?

Glad to see the Mini TOC thread has been moved over to the 3D forum. Now I don't have to jump back and forth between forums to catch up with all the great 3D planes. Hopefully you guys won't be corrupted by all the foamies over here as much as I have (I SWEAR I'll build a TOC someday, after I finish all my unfinished foamy kits! Balsa wood doesn't go bad, does it?)

Your 5300 rpm is enough to 3D the MiniTOC: It's the same rpm we were getting on the prototype which used a brushed Speed 300 and 9 720mAh Nimh's. Not a rocket but will definitely lunge out of a hover as long as AUW is <11oz.

Which 550 are you using? The E or R won't spin a 10x4.7 as fast as a plain 550, which I'm sure is much higher than 5300 (over 7000rpm if I recall correctly). Either that or is there something wrong with your 550? Mine are BEASTS!

Nevertheless 5300 rpm, almost no cost, I want one of your gems.

Did I mention I want one?

Can you at least tell me exactly how you do it? I'd like to test one in this airframe.

Now if only we could rig up a free controller...

Go to the original thread and check out the video in the first post.

It doesn't include every maneuver the thing is capable of, but will give you a good idea of the plane's versatility in flight.

On page 4 or so there are construction photos to give you an idea how it goes together.

Rafael (Iflyrc71) still sends out plans/instruction manual/equipment list on request (I think $15 + S&H $5)

I am sure my PJS is a 550, not R or E....and am surprised it doesn't perform better. Perhaps it's my batteries or controller....as each uses the lighter gauge wiring. Before I draw any final conclusions, I intend to do some further investigation using some of my other electric motor stuff.

I'm glad you like my CDrom stuff, it's a lot of fun building and testing these motors. My next motor will produce the same power as a PJS while (hopefully) keeping the current in check.

I get a lot of requests to build motors, but generally don't do so because I don't want this hobby to become a job. Now, with that said, I will build you a motor....after all you are Mister TOC. So as not to bore all these folks, I'll PM you to get the details of the motor you desire.

rad: a couple of questions.....
could esc timing be a factor?
my pjs (300) runs better on 3 cells on an old jeti esc....runs better on 2 cells with the new cc 10.

I noticed you said your pjs 550 only pulls 10.1 A.....interesting because at full bore with a 10x4.7 and the 3s 1200 etec it should be pulling more than that.

from one of eric's posts he seems to have both the cc10 and cc25....not sure if one works any better....i have both....but closest motor to that that I have is the rotex 25/6/15

salc said the pjs550 should turn around 7800 rpm with the 10x4.7

anyway the cdrom motor u have seems like a winner. I've got one i pulled from an old cdrom but its a bit small and might be more of a competitor with an IPS if i ever figure out how to mount the windings on some bearings and the bell on a shaft....

eric, sal...others....cool plane...i hope to get one soon....i like the way u guys are always sharing ideas in this thread....

ditto, that's why i waited so long to try and build one. if not a full kit, is there a possibility of a wingrib package perhaps?
as this is the part i'm most doubtfull about doing myself.
