Help!
Motor prop combo help

Hi everyone,

I have a second hand seagull extra 300ep
(http://www.horizonhobby.com/products...ra-300-SEA7000)

i have tried sooooo many motor prop combos on this plane I'm just plain over it!

there are certain requirements that need to be met, i.e. I have quite a few 3cell packs varying from 2200 - 2650Mah 40c that i want to use. I don't want to buy a 4 cell just for this plane, everything else i have can run on 3 cells and its convenient.

i currently have (can use) 40a esc, 65a esc 85a esc and have tried the following motors:

NTM-2836-1000
NTM-3536-1800
turnigy park 480-1020
NTM-3530-1400

With all of these motors i have physically tried the following props:

9x3.8 SF
9x6E
9x4.5E
10x5E
11x7E
12x6E

I got sick of buying props to bench test and started using propcalc to estimate power and more importantly for me flight time. I cant find a nice balance between power and time, the only one that got me close was the 3536-1800 with 9x6- great power and flight characteristics but on the specified batteries, only flew for 4 mins before plunging to the ground with no power to any of the servos My fault as i had drained the lipo, not testing before i flew and found it was drawing 65amps WOT.

I had to rebuild the tail with that miscalculation and so now with a built up tailplane and carbon spars a heavier motor is needed to get balance right.

I have entered all my motors into propcalc and tried 6 different sf props and electric props that i can currently buy (HK aus) not happy with results.
I would like the plane to be semi quick but have some aerobatic capability as im teaching myself that next step.

So thats where im at right now before buying another wrong motor i would love the wider communities input and HELP!

Chris

Thanks for the link some good sites in there, but this is already what i have done, motors i own with different props trying to get a combination i liked.

Hoping the community has some practical input rather than me guessing to a combo that will suit.

cheers

FWIW, the 3536 motor sounds like about the right size, but the 1800kv is too high meaning that you'd need to spin a small prop. Not really in the design brief for this mode. Maybe try the 1100kv in the same motor? I had a 3536 1100 in a 3D plane a bit bigger than that, and on 3S2200 and 12x6 it was a great combo.

Thanks Parkflyer81, there must have been a thread around here somewhere here on that exact plane.

what do you want out of the plane 3d , basic aerobatics , hard core aerobatics . reno racing ? or just a basic flight ? also do fly with full stick that can drain youre batt with a high kv I have a extra 330 from Blackhorse using a 1400kv on a 10x7 its not the correct setup but this is my thresher plane and I didn't need to use full power and it has a heap of grunt I can 3d etc.. of a 2200 3cell and I get up to 8min depending on my throttle use .

I would use maybe a park 480 that you have with 10x5 prop on the 65amp esc and just fly it . I wouldn't bench test it . also watt test youre setups .... this is my 10cents + gst worth

I was looking to get basic flight, basic aerobatics and some speed but at the same time if i wanted to try to prop hand or 3d it would allow me that flexibility.

well to save money i can try the 480 again on the suggested 10x5 only issue is i have to add around 40 grams in the nose to get it to balance, i ended up using a prop weight to get the needed balance. Out of interest the 1600kv your using what brand and specs are on that motor?

you might want to try this I use it on my 3d planes on a 13inch prop 4cell is better but 3 cell does the trick and a 60 amp esc

ok so how about i scrap the 3d side of this plane and with my current motor esc selection and 3s batteries i look to extend flight time and go for some speed?

The plane will always be able to loop and roll, I will look at a specific plane (Precision aerobatics or 3DHS) for intro to 3d.

9x6 seems to be a recurring prop choice any suggestions guys?

Of the motors i own as listed above would any be suited to make the extra 300 speedy?

or do any of you have extras, yak edge540 or similar that are flying on 3s, 1100 grams (ish) and have good performance?

cheers

try the NTM-2836-1000 of the 10x5 of the 65amp esc it should be good

if you need more grunt use the NTM-3530-1400 of the 10x5 but watt test it if you can uf not use the 9x6E
you would get good spped out of that but a high C rating on ya batts would be better

I cant find a nice balance between power and time
will always be a compromise. from what you have

NTM-2836-1000 with 9x6 cut down to 8x6. it is not a big airframe and a 2200 is the max size i would use
