My latest completion

It's a Minnie Mambo built from an Early RC kit. Powered by Cox Surestart .049 with a Cox International intake throttle, type "B" glow plug head conversion, and no-drag starter spring. Swapped the hex-shaped prop driver out for a Babe Bee style unit to allow the spring to fit. The plane is covered with Cream Ultracote and Blue Mist and Black Monokote. Radio gear is a Futaba 2.4rx, HK 939MG servos on the rudder and elevator, and Futaba S3111 on the throttle. Uses a 400mah NiMH battery pack from Radical RC. She rolls on inflatable Trexler balloon tires and has a steerable tailwheel. Should be fun to taxi out to the runway, shoot touch-n-goes, and taxi back like the "big" boys.

Finished the assembly and test ran the engine this evening. Did some preliminary taxi testing in the street after getting a good idle established on the reedie .049.

you know id never had a cox .020 before. i had some 049s but they were always a problem. not this 020 within 5 flips it buzzed to life!bim in 5 days on my magnum .53 and it wont even pop.

Then you're probably doing it wrong.

One thing that I have noticed is that after some phaffing, reedies will run, but their constant backwards running and wobbly needles usually irritate me after a while.

Front induction Cox motors are far and away the better motor. My TD.020 is the sweetest little thing I've ever come across, fuel, flip fly, giggle, rinse, repeat....

Finally finished up my Mini Mambo & installed the radio gear today.I Wanted to do the maiden today, but rain in the morning & 20+mph wind in the afternoon forced a re-think Doesnt look to much better tomorrow either...Gene

Perhaps.. but backwards starting .. which all reedy owners inevitably face... is ultimately down to starting technique/competence :-)
Wobbly needles are easily eliminated by discarding the useless cox spring and substituting a bit of decent quality sillycone fuel line.

Not sure if this qualifies but...

Craft Air Scout 15 built from an original kit this winter, powered by a Fox .15 BBRC. Flies great at 1/2 throttle and is quite capable at full throttle. Not fully broken in yet, is turning around 13,000 RPM w/ an 8x4 prop.

Covered in orange & blue Monokote.

Cale10, it varies by model. I mostly use NiMH packs from RadicalRC.com. They are small, light, affordable, and come soldered with the plug style of your choice. Most of my 1/2A birds use 400mah packs. The 160mah packs have worked well in my smaller stuff with TD .010s.

I'm hoping to make the trip to Little Rock for the SMALL fly-in in a few weeks. Might be able to get some video then.

The Minnie Mambo came out pretty heavy at over 22oz built from the kit! With the Surestart engine set up with the low compression "Type B" head for good throttling, it has just enough power to cruise scale-like around the pattern at wide open. Will barely climb with that setup. With a stock Cox head for more compression, it has decent authority but the reliable idle is too high for landing. With the "Type A" head from Bernie, the engine seems to overtemp during the flight and quit regardless of the number of head gaskets installed.

In summary, the plane flies decently with Surestart power when tuned for normal performance but is too heavy for a Surestart tuned for a low idle capability. In retrospect, I feel that a properly throttled TD .049(Dickeybird-style) would be a better choice for this plane. It would give more top end oomph as well as decent idle. Would probably be a great plane for a Norvel .074 but I don't have any of those and will continue to fly it with Cox power.
