There's no simple answer to such a question, as review of this thread will show.

It boils down to plenty for normal visual flying. If you are planning an FPV application things are more complicated.

As I said, and as the thread I referred to shows, there is no simple answer to that question. Transmitters don't have range specifications, just power and antenna gain.

The various Spektrum transmitters (DX7s, DX8, etc.) all have a similar power output that is essentially at the maximum legally permitted. And DX7s and DX8 use similar standard low gain antennas to minimize directionality for normal use.

It is possible for FPV use to add a highly directional antenna that increase the radiated power in certain directions at the expense of others.

Otherwise, what determines ranges is at the receiver end of the link. The receiver itself is an important factor, but so is the installation and whether there is a video transmitter that interferes with reception.

I suggest you go to the FPV forums for a discussion of how the DX7s/DX8 performs in combination with the AR8000 in various FPV applications. The general view seems to be that it can be used but is not ideal for FPV.

for FPV get a Module based transmiter because they have the capabilities of use any transmition protocol (actual and futures), from standard range 2ghz to UHF long range... if you already have DSM rx the natural choice are JR... if not and you are low in budget get a Hitec Aurora or the new Frsky Taranis

It should get you 5,280' 0.0"

Of course your results will differ based in outside influences.

Different radio, but same technology at the same power level.

One would certainly hope so. Modern 2.4 technology should give at least a mile under reasonable circumstances. But how much more depends on a whole series of variables, such as the receiver being used, the installation, the antennas, what type of video transmitter is on board the model, etc.

I am saying further. Others have said (testing the DX7) on GROUND tests they got 2.2 miles.

YMMV.

I flew 1.5 miles yesterday with a DX7S on my Bixler 2. My video TX and AR8000 are within a couple inches of each other. I think I could get even more range by moving them further apart.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSfbXQTYs7c

Setup
- Bixler 2
- DX7S
- Spektrum AR8000 with satellite receiver installed on the tail
- Eagletree OSD Pro with Guardian Stabilization, located near CG
- Immersion 5.8ghz 600mW TX, mounted to cockpit vertical wall. TX antenna pointing up
- Fatshark Attitude with built in receiver
- Spironet Circular Polarized Antennas (Cloverleaf and Skew Planar Combo)
- ESC mounted on top of fuselage, near motor
