DTF High Wing Aerobatic

this is my aerobatic scratchbuilt plane. it is a version 3(version 1 and 2 had a kfm-3 step) with a kfm-4 airfoil, I think the maiden should go well.it is 4ch with 4servos and the ESC.it is gonna use a turnigy aerodrive 2836 950kv on 3s with an APC 10x7/11x7.it is my first time really painting a plane and I don't think it turned out to bad so let me know what you think. thanks for looking.

Looks good; far better than my first paint job.

In going for aerobatics on a high wing did you use much down thrust on the motor?

so....maiden went ok but it has a problem I cant figure out. when I go to give it right aileron it rolls about to 45 degrees and then just slides its tail to the side and no controls help it.it does the same with left aileron. any ideas how to fix it? I already tried aileron differential.

When you say "slides to the side" do you mean it yaws in the plane of the banked wings or the plane of the wings before the bank? I am also thinking that if no control has an effect, the control surfaces are too small. At a quick glance, the horizontal stabilizer and elevator look sort of small.

My 25" WS su-26 has a 12" elevator.. Wing chord at root is 7-1/2" at root, tapering to 5-1/2" at tip. Horizontal stabilizer chord is 4-1/2" and 2-1/2" of that is elevator. That makes the horizontal stabilizer about 50% of the WS and the HS chord about 60% of the wing chord. The elevator is over 50% of the hs. The vertical stabilizer is 6" from the bottom of the rudder to the top and 5" long. The rudder is 3" or 60% of the 5". You might not have enough stabilization from the tail surfaces and enough control authority from the elevator and/or rudder.

You might ask on the thread you got the plans from. There are frequently issues with tail/nose moment, relative size of the various surfaces, incidence, etc. that have been worked out through trial and error by the designer.

Design links that might provide some help:

EDIT: Just looked at a Super Decathlon three-view and the HS is only 27$ of the main WS. Looks like a real big rudder, though...

hey jim,

it is complete scratchbuilt,so no plans. I am going to make my rudder bigger(by about 35%) and see if that helps.it has plenty of elevator and aileron control(completely aerobatic) but the rudder is a little anemic. so I will see if that works.
