Mine is from a 48x creative cdrom. I am using 14 turns of #26 with the stock magnets. I used the 3mm head guide rod as a shaft and have turned the end down to 2mm like I said. I put in 3mmx6mm ball bearings from an old GWS IPS gearbox. I am using 2-cell Etec 1200mah. On a HB with stock blades, and an 11 tooth pinion, I was getting well over 20 minute flights. I cut down the blades and went with a 14 tooth pinion to get higher head speed. I think I cut them too much. I am only getting around 17 minutes now, but the control is much better.

I was wondering if you were using a head guide rod, those things are pretty tough to grind on. Hobby Lobby sells 3m brass tube and a 2mm that will slip inside the 3mm, why wouldn't that work?

It has been so long since I did it that I can't remember how hard it was to grind it down. I would think the brass tube would probably work ok.

I am placing a bulk order for magnets to use for these CD-Rom conversions. I am in Ohio, so shipping to North America would be affordable (probably $4 in the USA). I am getting the 5 x 2.5 x 1 magnets from engconcepts.net
These let you get closer tolerances than the 5x5x1 flat magnets. Roughly 24 magnets will fit around the inside of a CD-Rom motor. 30 would cost about $2.40 plus shipping. Larger orders would not increase the shipping. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Thinking about magnets for a conversion. I am hoping to find 2mm thick magnets though. I guess I could stack them.

If you have the room, they do have 5x5x1, 5x5x1.5 and 5x5x2 mm on their web site.

I've ordered some 5x5x1 N45's from http://www.engconcepts.net/ as well. I'm having very good success with the stock magnets in the old Hitachi drive motors I'm using, but want to try better magnets just to see what happens.

It's 2 mm! Originally it came with 2.5 mm shaft, I just removed the brass bushing rebore the hole and plugged in 2mm ID bearings.
The can which holds the magnet are not from the original CD-ROM motor but from one of the brushed motor that was soldered to the CD-ROm board. I just took a 2mm shaft and soldered on brass bushing of that can, simple!

what do you guys use 4 a speed controler??

Nice job jiri,
I've tried cc-10, cc-25, and cc-10 micro. All seem to do a good job running the cdrom's. I'm surprised at the low number of turns you guys are using, especially with 3S lipo's. Art
