Battery cooling in ice water?
In order to cool my batteries faster, I thought about putting them in zip lock bags and droping them into an ice chest with ice.
Can this cause any damage to my packs, or is there any other reason why I should not do this?

It may shock the cells and cause uneven cooling, maybe even warp the cases! That is awful thin metal for the cell case.
If you want to cool them faster, try using a cold cloth in front of the cooling fan. Just like a swamp cooler.
One of the best methods I heard to keep your cells good is to have 3 packs for the plane. 1 is flying, 1 is cooling, 1 is charging.

Along these same lines, I just installed a s500 in my T52 and it runs great. However, it REALLY heats up my RS 8 cell 1600 NiMH batts. How bad is this and what batt set up would be better if any? I get good duration, I just don't want to fry a battery.

ni mh hates heat
S500 uses a lot of amps and on my pylon sports racer on a cut down 6*6 now 5*6 it uses 20 plus amps with my 8* 800ARS so flights are short and fast
1600 nimh good for 4 amps continious and 8 amps in bursts and exceeding 60 degrees celcius is sopposed to damage the nimh type so suggest change to
nicad sanyo 800 ars best below 20 amps
ni cad cp1300 33grams
nicad cp1700 44grams
nimh panasonic 2000 44 grams able to do 20 amps sort of
nimh panasonic 3000 60 grams able to do 30 amps
loads off threads on ezone for this but if you do amps suggest cp nicads as nimh reputed to give 600 charges and many of my nicads have probably evxceed 800 cycles and nicadf can take heat is cheaper land takes some severe crashes and mischarging from faulty chargers
FLY low and swat the fly s
