40" Yak 54 Fun!

I had an awesome time this morning tooling around with my Yak 54. A perfect 3D trainer if there ever was one.

Setup:

Razor 2500 in GWS "C" gearbox
12x6 GWS or APC SF prop
Thunder Power 3s1p 2100 or Kokam 1500 3s1p

Sitting pretty:

Closeup of landing gear:

Even though it's a little blurry you can see the outline of my first failed attempt requiring me to replace and glue the depron. The doubled-up mount has been going strong for quite some time now.

Tailskid:

For this I simply put a large zip tie into the foam and reinforced both sides with carbon fiber strips. I then covered it with thin Depron.

Hovering:

After tail tap

Finally, hovering in the sun:

Too much fun!

If you live in san diego are you going to midwinter elecrics? If any of you dont know what that is its an electric meet held every year at the club field of the san diego electic flyers. This year it starts on the 13th of febuary and is over by the 16 it is totally awsome and if you live within 10 hours in a car from there I would say it is worth going. I have been there twice and am going for a third time this year, yes you can fly as much as you want.

I will be going to MWE as it's about 5 minutes from where I live. I hope to see you there.

I would go, but it's not worth the drive if there aren't any vendors Has the club/town decided to change that yet? If not, how's it looking for next year?

Great Yak though, and nice landing gear. From the looks of it, you're doing juuuuussst fine

nice plane man. My 36" yak has so much power that im thinking about building the 40". i just need to find a way to mount some landing gear on it. i like what you did with yours but i have some extra carbon rods that i would much rather use. anyone know any good ways to mount landing gear on these yaks?

Awakened,
Sure you know this but on my FFF stuff I first started using a "D" spur and a "C" pinion for a 5.5:1, if I remeber correctly, with a RZ2500. I was suprized to find it pulling 18amps with a 12X6 and 3S3P Kokam 340 pack. I changed over to true "D" gearing and now it draws 13.4amps and has all the power you need. You might be able to get a little longer flight. My FFF Yak 40" weighs 14oz. These are great planes. Great job hovering, The weather has been really cold and windy so not much practice time out here on the east coast.

Cheers,
Jim

WHO SAID WHAT ABOUT VENDORS? there have been vendors the last 2 times I have gone, really good ones, like hacker. If the vendors don't go than who'll go to the meet? Not to sound desprate but why wouldn't there be vendors? This is all so confusing!?

Sucks, don't it. Apparently the city decided to put a $5000 fee on SEFSD for vendors, and they didn't have it, or a way to make it. I was planning on going, but not if there aren't vendors

You seem to be a pretty skilled and enthusiastic pilot, SkyPyro, why wouldn't you go to see the flying? That's all I'm going for.

Usually I go for just the flying but then when Im not in the air i'm looking at all of the cool stuff, like last time I bought a bunch of props after breaking all the ones we had. But there is one thing. Almost all domos are put on by vendors to demo thier planes and motors. darn So who should I com plain to, you or the city council?

Thanks for the nice comments, guys. I certainly wouldn't have been able to do this without E-Zone and being able to contact the designer himself. It's really nice not having to reinvent the wheel when it comes to airplane design.

fly

I live in San Jose and fly at Rancho San Antonio open space preserve and we want to start a fun fly like Mwe and kind of have a place to do it. Theres an air force/nasa base called Moffet where they can fly C5's out of, so thier taxiways would be big enough for the biggest rc's and half of them are unused. There is at least one person for sure who works at Moffet and might be able to convice nasa to let us borrow a runway for a few days. As for vendors I don't know about how that would go. There are also a few large bimp hangars that we may be able to use for indoors. It's a long shot but might work.
