Graves RC

I brought my plane into Graves RC in Orlando, Florida to get a motor. They suggested a motor, prop and ESC combo and it was not cheap. I ended up buying a Micro Dan motor.

The motor is not powerful enough and the prop should be bigger! The problem is the prop cannot be any bigger on this plane or it will not fit. So I have about 1:2 thrust to weight ratio which is absolutely crap.

I call up Graves and guess what. They won't take the motor back! They recommended the WRONG motor for this plane and won't refund the $65 motor or even exchange it. They don't know what they are talking about, don't take any advice from them.

Well, that sucks.

Maybe if you post what plane you have, what parts you bought maybe I can help.

Look up what plane you have, and look up the manufacturer's specifications for the suggested motor. Do those specs match the specs from the motor you bought?

And the way you wrote it, I am not absolutely clear. Did you buy the MicroDan because that is what they recommended; or did you buy the MicroDan because what they recommended was too expensive?

Many [if not most] retailers do not take back used products, but sometimes you can deal with the manufacturer directly for replacements or upgrades.

I bought exactly what Mark in GravesRC recommended. He refused to exchange or take it back.

On my combat wing that size, a 7x5 prop using a 1400 KV motor yields decent results on 3s. Not a speed demon, but on a wing it works well for my FPV......so your 1800ish KV motor should be stronger yet.

Another option is to spin a 6x5.5 prop on 4s. Those are the two recommended setups on that motor. All depends on what your goals are. If going for FPV, I would tend to use the 7x5 on 3s.

Graves doesn't do warranty service. you have to do that through the manufacturer.
Graves will tend to recommend expensive stuff, they sell high quality stuff and not crap.
I find it hard to believe that it is a problem with the motor, I would lean more towards your existing setup. if you are running on the wrong voltage you will not have a good experience. if you are on 2s, try a 3s. if you are on 3s, try a 4s.

Here's the specs. for it.

This motor is a 1845Kv version built for the APC 7x5 & 6x5.5 prop running on 3s or 4s Lipo.
7 Turns, 22AWG, DLRK, Star, 14 magnet poles

How do you know it's 1200kv? Did you measure rpms and voltage with a fully charged pack and no prop? MicroDan are known for power and reliability. If you are still having a problem after trying different prop/4s setups, I'd call Dan at gobrushless.com and talk to him. He's a great guy, who knows his motors, and will help you find the right motor/wind combination for what you are trying to achieve. If there is a mechanical problem with your microDan motor he will make it right.
