Wing support would be a good idea for that much weight. An alternative to the compression strut is flying wires attached to (and across) the landing gear. I believe JMH is using flying wires if you want to have a search for it.
Brushless options are Razor (use the GWS gearbox/pinion), MiniAC 1215/16 (will need to drill pinion or use aftermarket GB), Astro 010, or a PJS-5xx, -800, or Nippy Black 1812/100. The last few are outrunners, no gearbox required. The Astro is probably the wimpiest of the bunch, but it doesn't need as big a battery, so it may yet work out. The others will give ~ 1:1 thrust/weight.
Figure $70-90 for the motor alone. Brushless ESC/BEC will run an additional $70 or so. Full throttle draw will be up to or over 18 amps depending on gearing, prop, and number of lipo cells, so a 2100 or 2p 1500 might be needed.
