Olypic II is under construction now

I have saved this kit of an "Olymlic II by Lee renauld of Airtronics" for a long time. I have just started construction.

I want to build it with ailerons and Spoilers.

Also I'd like to have a diesel 0.15 power pod for my field.

Any suggestion for making spoilers and how to actuate them is welcome.

Skip the ailerons and use a servo for each spoiler.
Enjoy a great flying sailplane from the past.

Agreed about skipping the ailerons and just adding spoilers. You've got an excellent sailplane there, don't try to re-engineer the thing.

As for power systems, electric is the way eveeryone seems to be going nowadays.

Here's an easy, reliable way to do spoilers, courtesy of my friend Ray.

I agree with LVsoaring,
Go with electric, you have many more options with brushless out runners than with any other power choice. No mess, folding props, easy to use and no starting issues.

LV, I have constructed a mock-up of the method you posted for use in my Olympic II.

Just so happens that I have an unopened box with a "Paragon kit" in it. It must have been bought 12 years ago.

The Paragon was written up in an article in RCM I think.

The wind yesterday and tooday on this Texas Gulf Coast is between 18 and 30 mph and gusty... even the big 25 pound gassers at our field are grounded today. I got out at 6:45 and had one flight with a large 60 glow powered Delta of my design, Then the sun came up and the stinking wind cam with it,

It does my heart good to think of finding such a treasure! Build that Oly 2, get comfortable with it, then build the Paragon. You won't regret it!

As for winds, I hear ya. Just had a severe storm pass right to our south, then it picked up steam and turned into a major tornado over Shawnee OK. Hope everyone out that way is OK.

Understand that the Olympic II was meant to be a slow flyer. The wings are not designed to withstand high speed. The wings will flutter at medium speed.

My OLY ll kit is not prone to flutter, most likely due to the 3/8" thick vertical shear blocks between the spars and longer 1/16" plywood horizontal spar webs. Also, adding washout to the wing tips is a contributor to high speed wing flutter.

Enjoy your OLY ll, it is a very good flying sailplane.

Nice and looking forward to pics.

Wondering...Just got my NATS NOS in last night an hour before deadline. I have Ray's kit, and it's been a while on woodie kits. Oh, about build hours for an average clean strong stock build??? No no, although sweet as ultimatetwo's museum builds, not enough time nor desire at this time.

John, Sorry, I guess I didn't make myself clear enough ... I was and am fully aware his kit is the Airtronics kit. I was trying to draw a distinction between the original Airtronics and the Sky Bench kit .. I have to do this so the new guys know of the differences between the kits. As Ed Whyte, a previous owner the the Aitronics kits said, " I made a better kit of the OLY ll".

Everybody have a great weekend, stated mine by flying with the DARTS guys of Dayton, Ohio today. 5 hour round trip ... worth every mile.
