Velocity BL - taking a chance with balsa (Modified Quark)

Call me crazy - but after buying an aerobatic racer from PA, and getting a look at a gorgeous old balsa cirrus kit - i developed an appreciation for balsa things...

So I made these wings... 2m span - my own planform with a tp42/29 combo.

Then I thought.... Aw sheeeet - I need a fuse!!! And I quickly found the Quark plans. So after importing them into illustrator - messing with the outline, modifying ribs and cutting lightening hole after listening hole - I sent it all off to the laser cutters and got in return a box full of packing foam and balsa bits.

A few nights later - a steep learning curve followed when I was left standing behind the kitchen bench with a heat gun in one hand and an iron in the other. Like the housewife of a moddeling mans dreams - I learnt to use covering film.

It's not that hard... Well - I haven't finished the ailerons yet and I have a strong suspicion that they'll be as wavy as a Hawaiian coastline in winter... Anyway...

I haven't mentioned what the goal is yet!!!!! Is gotta be pretty (which I think it is...) it's gotta be light (currently at 350g with film, 2x servos and the pushrods) and of course it has to be extremely aerobatic. Why not foam? Cost for one, size for two, and the challenge for three. I'll have the Velocity FS soon enough for foamy abuse - this thing is for careful flying and wow factor. Like classics of ye ol' times like the Excaliber and Quartz. BL stands for Balsa - Long Fuse. In contrast to the Velocity FS - Foam - Short Fuse

Will I destroy it? Probably.

Here's some pics of the progress so far...

I'd also like to say a massive thanks to Andrew from SC models down in Vic. He's put up with my millions of emails and produced some amazing laser cut balsa parts for an unbelievable price. It was SO easy, quick and I can't thank him enough for his advice and work

He's a building machine!! Nice

I love these new wood planes being developed - the SnowflaK by Stéphane Combet (pgts) is really cool too. Sure they won't stand up to the same abuse as a foamie, but not everyone feels the need to fly like a complete jackass, either. And many appreciate the look and fun of building from wood. Neat to see it - further speciation in the aerobatic sphere, all good in my book!!

Beautiful work Rhys. I built quite a few balsa planes many years ago and often think I'd like to do so again. Wish I had a bit more time to spare!

Sean.

Awesome Rhys! There's definitely a great deal of enjoyment to be had in playing with balsa, especially nicely cut laser'd balsa She looks great, and I'm betting she flies nicely. Following this closely...

And she's done!!

Broke the elevator bell crank which was actually a blessing - I had small throws for the maiden - but I thought what the heck... If I can fly the Yoda - ill fly this with a mad stab.

Maiden tomorrow in the big air! Wish me luck! GoPro is charged

Yewwww!

Just setup a low rate of maybe 20º travel each way on that elevator and you should be just fine, I'd think.

Good luck with the maiden, Rhys!!!
