I asked pretty much the same question and got some good answers, In the thread there is a link to another thread with even more info so here is the link to my thread and it seems like the Crazy Max is one hot little plane.

Yipee! Too bad I just started another project.... Oh, well, There's always January!
GaryB: Not sure what you mean. Did you read the specs in the other thread? Sure sounds like a good possibility to me. |

...hey, i hope i'm wrong - i heard bad reports from others in our club about the original Mini Max...
...but even if it's much improved - 3D??? - torque rolls, waterfalls, elevators, Harriers, tail first touchdowns from a vertical hover??? - i remain skeptical - how are they defining 3D? |

...just have Mike Greenshields post a video demonstrating all the above maneuvers with the stock power setup - they'll have my order for one within the hour!...
...ps - i have built & flown Global kits (Tequila Sunrise & Free Style - and like them) - i'm just having a little trouble with the 3D claims for this plane... |

Those spec's are close to my PSF, if that's a speed 300. I've been using a 9x6 with a 4:1 box. Vertical should be pretty good, as is top speed. Duration on 600AE is only a few minutes. I haven't tried hovering yet, which typically needs a big diameter prop with a small pitch. That 7.5x5 sounds small to me.

The stock setup is a good all-around performance combination. Short takeoff, fun speed, good recovery, for the average park flyer pilot, this is a fun combination.
With a simple adaptor (or just a spacer and a couple of big washers) the plane can then handle the wide range of APC slow flyer props. The gearbox is also our standard. It comes with the 3.67:1 ratio. However, it is possible to change ratios. We also offer a 4.25:1 ratio for the same gearbox. With this gear ratio, you can use the 9x6 slowflyer propeller. This gives slower top end but great hovering ability. We've also used the 8" prop with stock gear ratio. So, the general theory is that we've produced a plane that when set up stock can take off and land from the average picinic table and be very aerobatic for the newer pilot (maybe 3rd or 4th plane). But in the hands of an expert, can be set up to really perform and also be customized to the personal flying tastes of the indiviudual pilot. As for me flying it on video, I'm sure there are many other pilots who could put on a better show. Frankly, the engineer of the Crazy Max absolutely frightens me when he flies. The teeny-tiny area he flies it in with full deflection and full throttle is just scary. Reminds me of the IFO pilots doing flight demos at IMS. Never more than about 15 feet away from their face and never, ever actually level. -Mike |

...thanks for the clarification - so really what we're talking about is a plane that with minor modifications, not stock, SHOULD be able to vertically hover - these mods would not make it fully 3D capable and able to perform all of the maneuvers listed above? - this is getting more believable...

What I'm getting at is that it is really potent and very light when set up stock. Most people are going to find it really fun to fly before they even modify or change even one thing.
However, for the performance guru's out there, the prop change (and possibly a gear ratio change) is what it needs to make it do the hovering stuff. It is simply a matter what you want it to do. We've had several pattern flyers fly it bone stock and all were pretty impressed. That is one of the reasons we're so confident about it. -Mike |

...you are very convincing - if it wasn't for the fact that i just got my Firecat going last weekend and i'm assembling my PB Mini Fun Flyer this weekend, i might go ahead and order one...but my son's been looking for another electric...

...the Firecat is cool - the PB Fun Fly - only one flight so far in 15-18 MPH wind - not much fun...
...the Crazy Max 3D? i'm weakening - may have to have it, too - any flight reports to put me over the top? |

I flew my crazy max today, it has none of the flight characteristics of it's parent the mini-max, this plane indeed does rock! The wing on the crazy is amazingly strong, the motor is very powerful for
this plane, although the firewall still needs reinforcement. I used the 800nimh packs and flew most of the 8 minutes at 3/4 throttle. This plane has got to have the most smiles per dollar of any plane I have flown. I relax more learning aerobatics with this plane because if I stuff it I've only lost the price of a visit to the Outback Steak House. |
