The Killer Paint Job: How-To

I just ordered a couple new GWS slope gliders to replace my current tree magnet.

I have seen some really nice finishes put on by rcgroup members. And would like to attempt something similar on one of the new planes.

If you have a good thread or website bookmarked on the subject would you be kind enough to post it here?

Hi Fiasco,
Can't find my thread from a while ago but if you copy this thread into the GWS vendors BB, the crew there will throw loads of info to you.
What birds are they?

My last three were
Mustang (painted version)
Zero (unpainted, left it white)

Mustang (first paint job)

the two new ones coming are
Spit
109

The Germans had some particulary wild camo and paint schemes for the 109 to pick from.

GWS Me-109

Good choices!

Here is my "GWS Me-109 - another one". I did mine without any special tool or trick. Just plain water color brush and a few blank paper (dry). Thanks to those straight lines. The only trick is to hold paper on and quickly do those straight lines.

Other discussion are in that thread.

Here is my-Zero-

Mustang-

The Invasion Stripes where hand painted using blue painters tape to mask off the area.

A E-Starter that I painted to look like a O-1 Birddog FAC-

I use Tamyia paints and use a airbrush. The decals are mostly aftermarket ones from SIG and Major Decals.

Take your time, and before you even think about mixing paint, lay everything out in you mind how you want it done...

Oh, it's also missing a prop, properly painted spinner, and the chunk of foam on the top there.

Great Planes Guys!! I espesialy like the E-starter and Reno 51! Nice job on both!
Cam, you can make a neat and effective little motor accesability hatch with 2 or 3 sets of $1(or so..) magnets from Radio Shack(if you have RS in Canada)

My e-starter paint scheme is below. I airbrushed the entire plane, masked all hard edges with masking tape and cut stencils out for the celtic knots and the bumblebee on the tail (and the writing for the registration # )

aand...the side.

i used metallizer enamels on the cowling and drilled extra ventilation holes in the side, then airbrushed some black scuff over it for random scorch marks...

extremely dilute the paint for any kind of weathering... airbrush is really a helpful thing for stuff like scorch marks or sun fading of the paint etc. You want things to be extremely gradual so really thin paint is a must. There are alot of techniques used for model display kits for weathering that aren't very practical for foamies (a wash, for example, where you practically douse the plane in extremely thin paint , whipe it all off, but some gets left in the indented panel lines etc. where the cloth doesn't clean...)

darkened panel lines look great, but make sure you don't make them too THICK when you darken them up
