World Models Velox

Hi Folks
Just got my Velox done last night and tested it for the first time today. Wow! This is a great flying plane. Did some stall tests at full 3D elevator rates. From level flight, I shut off the throttle and pulled back the stick. It nosed up and mushed forward. Very unlike the Funtana 40.

The finish on the plane is excellent. The parts are outstanding. I particularly like the polished and contoured CF landing gear. It's the nicest I've seen so far and I've bought a lot of them. Also the spinner is excellent with an aluminum back plate and brass adapter to fit perfectly on the motor shaft.

So here's some config info:

Motor - Hacker C50-10L, 6.7:1
Servos - JR DS368s + 2 Futaba 3102s for the elevators

Thunderpower Lipos Tested:

5s3p + 19x10. 20x8, 20x10 AUW approx 8lbs 4 oz less than 55amps
6s3p + 17x10 AUW approx 8lbs 10 oz @58amps

I liked the last config the best. It had a thrust reading of over 10lbs.

While the overall performance was excellent for pattern, the plane needs a bit more thrust for 3D. I will hover, but it needs a bit more to achieve unlimited vertical performance.

The plane flies very straight and is very responsive to the controls. I had my friend Greg S. assemble most of it and it has giant scale hinges to allow very large deflections on all surfaces. Hence the roll rate is very fast. Not as fast as the Funtana but more than you would need 3D.

The plane easily knife edges with no tendancy to pull to canopy or belly. It requires no additional offset to track vertically. The suggested CG seems to be right on. It almost feels a bit tail heavy.

The rudder is pull-pull. The elevator servos were mounted in the rear although the ARF was setup for a forward servo with a yoke push rod.

I think the most impressive test today was the blender. I have a lot of 3D planes that do this but they don't flatten out very well at the end. They tend to be a bit nose high to keep from losing altitude. The Velox snapped perfectly and stop in to a level flat spin. It reminded me of the TOC videos. It was really great.

So what's the bad news?

2 things -- landing and landing gear.

I had a hard time landing the plane smoothly today. I don't know if was nervousness from having a new plane or what. I had a couple of bouncy landings.

I had one good landing by putting in a ittle spoileron. This helped to allow the plane to be a bit more nose high without stalling. It's the same trick I'm using on my 80" Extra.

I ended up blowing out the landing gear on the 3rd landing -- which was pretty smoot. So the landing gear area needs to be beefed up.

I did a fix at the field and got in another flight. I did the blender on this flight and on the landing made a bad approach and stalled. Pretty much pancaked the plane. Blew out the landing gear some damaged part of the wing. It's all fixable. We have a predicted few days of rain ahead so I gues I will have the time.

Power System

I would like to get a bit more thrust for unlimited vertical without adding more weight. Fortunately, I have a B50-13xl, 5.2 that should do the trick.

I think I will try an 8s2p with a 20x10 prop. Motocalc tends to overestimate amp draw and thrust so I'm hoping this will be in the 40amp peak range. Anyway, another 2lbs of thrust is what I'm looking for.

So I figure I have a pretty even weight trade off:

6s3p + C50L (18 cells)

versus

8s2p + B50XL + heatsink (16 cells)

The latter setup might be a bit lighter. In any case, the plane will be under 9lbs.

Great looking model Kyle. I'm glad you jumped on the project right away. I will be following this post. Did the carbon gear hold up? Justing failed at the mounting area?

Another great conversion. What are the dimensions of this model.

Is that the landing gear that comes with the ARF or is it custom?

I noticed the 2p packs you're thinking of trying. Are you experimenting with Tanic lipos now?

Any chance someone can take a video of this plane? Looks like you're getting ready for MWE. I wish I could come this year .

The CF gear is very nice and very strong. The ply section came out. It needs larger triangle stock to hold it to the formers.

Kelvin
The LG is stock. Will try to video and I DO plan on bringing it to MWE. I have not tried Tanic cells.

It's a 60 size plane so it's about the size of the Aeroworks 60 size Edge 540 that Hacker converted. I think this plane is quite a bit lighter. If you've seen that plane, then you have an idea of how this plane performs.

20 cells on a Tai Ji should work. I've converted the Zen 50 on 16 cells. With Lipos, it would be killer. The Zen with Lipos will be a full pound lighter -- probably just under 7lb AUW.
