Build Log
DJI F450 Flame Wheel FPV

This is going to be my first FPV model aircraft. I started on the build last night. So far here's what we have:

Flame Wheel 450 W NAZA autopilot and GPS
http://www.atlantahobby.com/store/pc...idcategory=872

I use the DJI 1038 props on my quad. I got mine at a LHS but Esprit sells them:
http://www.espritmodel.com/dji-prope...0-x-3-8-2.aspx

Immersion RC 5.8ghz 600mw video tx (this one is kind of hard to find right now but should be back soon)
http://www.futurehobbies.com/details...-8ghz?vmcchk=1

Fat Shark Dominator video goggles
http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...PV_System.html

Fat Shark Dominator 5.8GHz Receiver Module
http://www.readymaderc.com/store/ind...roducts_id=524

You will need a battery to power the goggles. I used a 2s 1100mah battery from the local hobby shop and soldered my own connector on it. This is the manufacturer battery, it was sold out everywhere when I was trying to get it:
http://www.readymaderc.com/store/ind...roducts_id=386

also you WILL need a charger adapter for the battery, I forgot to get one and it held me up for a week!:
http://www.readymaderc.com/store/ind...oducts_id=1033

Bluebeam Whip Antenna set (this is how I get the impressive video range)
http://www.futurehobbies.com/product...blue-beam-whip

SONY Super HAD CCD II 600TVL D-WDR DNR Mini Board Camera
http://www.securitycamera2000.com/pr...a-DIY-FPV.html

since my video transmitter puts out a 5v power lead for the camera, and the camera I'm using requires 12v, I had to use one of these:
http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/2117

Turnigy nano-tech 2200mah 3S 35~70C Lipo Pack
http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...arehouse_.html

this is the little DVR I use to record my flights. Great unit:
http://www.readymaderc.com/store/ind...oducts_id=1204

I use some RCA couplers to connect my goggles to my DVR. I got mine from Radio Shack. Get yours from Monoprice, it's (a LOT) cheaper:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

JR 11X 2.4GHz DSMX Transmitter Only Radio (I bought this for flying full house RC gliders, all you really need for a radio is something with at least 7 channels, preferably 8. The Spektrum DX8 or even the Turnigy 9x would work just fine for flying my quadcopter.)
http://www.espritmodel.com/jr-11x-24...nly-radio.aspx

So far so good, I am finding that I need a lot of "odds and ends" - for example a connector so I can charge the battery for the Fatsharks.

Currently the plan is to get the F450 up and flying and then add the camera and vtx to it once everything else is setup.

Made a quick run to the local hobby shop, turned out I had a gift certificate I never cashed in! So I got a male JST plug which will power the FPV system, and also the new 10" carbon props from DJI. Everyone, including the LHS has told me not to trust the props that come with the kit. The new props look very different from the stock ones.

Getting close to finishing the build. The final piece I needed, an charging adapter for the Fat Shark battery arrived today so I hooked up the video system and tested it - worked on the first try.

Maiden flight was today. I only flew for a few minutes and then only about 5-6ft up but no major issues. Only problems were:
  • Went into voltage protection really early. Turns out the default settings are very conservative. I turned them down.
  • In GPS Atti mode it drifts to the right. Not sure if this is just due to normal GPS innacuracies or if my compass calibration was not good. Will re-calibrate before the next flight.

Another item for today, after the maiden flight I took the props off, turned everything back on including the FPV system, and set it in the front window of my house. I then drove to the top of a multi-story garage that is 540 meters from that window. I powered up the Fat Sharks and had good video. I then checked my 11x and tried out switching into the different flight modes and into failsafe: all worked. I tried spinning the motors up and that worked too. Had I been feeling really lucky I probably could have flown it back to myself.

Got in another brief flight this evening right at sunset. I have adjusted the voltage protection but am still having problems with the voltage alert. This time the red light started blinking at 3 and a half minutes of flight. I'm not sure what the problem is but it may be the battery. When I got back to the house the battery still had 11.6v left on it. I am using the Turnigy nanotech 3s 2200's, I think I'll try some other batteries.

I recalibrated the compass but it's still drifting to the right in GPS Atti mode. I did some more research and found that other Naza GPS pilots have found the drift resolves itself if you leave the quad on the ground for 2-3 minutes before taking off. I'll test that next.

Slowly working my way up to the first FPV flight. Once everything is working properly and I can do some good figure 8's with the quad I'll put the goggles on.

The weather finally broke last weekend and I was able to work out the last of the issues and fly FPV for the first time ever.

- the voltage alert issue turned out to be because I did not calibrate the voltage in DJI Assistant. Once I calibrated it to read the same voltage as my watt meter my voltage alert problems vanished.

- the GPS drift problem is solved by leaving the quad on the ground for a couple of minutes following activation. This gives it time to get a really solid lock.

- I tested out IOC and failsafe and all worked well.

- I have completed 6 FPV missions so far. 5 went well without any issues. For one flight, right after I took off into a pretty stiff headwind (17mph) the camera got loose in its mount and started pointing straight down. Unable to see, I decided to pull the failsafe switch. The quad returned and landed right on target. Truthfully I could have flown it back LOS but it's all good.

- I have been pushing the range a little bit at a time. So far the farthest I have gone out is 600 meters.

- the only issue that remains is getting the gains right. I have the basic gains all set at 140% right now, any my atti gains are both at 100%. I'm getting oscillations with a tailwind blowing past the quad so I think I'll turn the basic gains all down to 130% and see how she flies.

I like your write up on the F450 and FPV. I have had mine about the same time as yours. I have not gone FPV yet but looking to do it real soon.

Fpv

That all looks like a great set-up...But $3000 + USD to get into FPV flight is a steep step. You can do it a lot cheaper then that but, hey, If I had money to burn, I would go the same route. Looks like great stuff..good luck!

$3000? The total cost of my quad plus all of my FPV gear is about $1100. The radio was about $650 but its overkill for this application. Like I said I purchased it for flying full house gliders. So all together about $1750. It could be done a lot cheaper with a more inexpensive radio but I use mine for more than just FPV. You could reduce it more by getting a monitor or cheaper goggles. The Dominators are good but expensive.

true.. true.. but I use those for other things as well. Actually I kind of wish DJI made a Linux version of their software, a friend of mine gave me his old laptop for free, so I slapped Linux on it instead of paying to upgrade it to Windows 7. In fact, I'm typing this message on it! But alas, there is no version of DJI Assistant for my free laptop with free O.S.

OS's

Great OS Linux is. Gotta know how to use it....This OS is unique for hacking purposes, most "white collar" crime is committed on this OS for it's unique ability to hide it tracks after the crime is committed. Lots of programmers use this system and laugh at OSWin7 & OSWin8.

I went ahead and got some LED lights for my F450, the $12 set Hobby King sells here:

http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...dProduct=37807

It's just long enough to fit the F450 almost perfectly. And it looks really weird when flying around at night, I have stopped traffic on the nearby streets twice now with these lights.
