S400 DH82A Tiger Moth

Penang, Malaysia

It took a while to do this plane. It is based upon a Peter Rake plan given free with Flying Scale Models megazine in 2003.

I modified it a bit to make it more scale and to make the wings detached from the fuselage. On Penang island land is scarce and we do not have that much space where we live.

As can be seen I have completed both the fuse and the lower wing hence I felt it time to get the thread going.

I intend to use a Graupner S400 7.2 V mated with a Pro Maxx 3:1 gearbox.

Can anyone tell me which wooden prop to use?

The cockpit detaches to allow swapping batteries (a tip I picked up from someone in this site). Can't imagine having to remove wing, cabanes and LG to swap batteries.

Looks nice. To find a prop, you have to know what direct drive prop would work (probably a 6/4), and multiply the square root of the gear ratio times the old prop diameter. This will give you the new, geared prop diameter that will pull the same amps.
Looks good so far,Yeap. Keep us posted.

That looks really nice!

I'll guess at a prop in the 11x6 range, although as long as the ampdraw suits your motor and battery, it shouldn't be overly critical.

I am really pleased to have gotten 2 replies so far!

I am looking for a wooden prop. 11 X6 does seem large but I only expect it to move around the sky and admire its lines. ANy particular brand. I will have to buy by mail so I wnat to get it right.

Yeap,
Since you're using the 7.2 volt motor, I'd recommend a Master Airscrews Electric 10x6 or 11x7 wooden prop. I've had good results using these props on various geared 400 models.

On 6v 400 and 3:1 10x7 is sort of ballpark. On 8 cells.

You can try anything from 9x7 up to 12x10 on a 7.2v motor and 8 cells. The smaller props will be more speedy, since RPM will be a little higher. But the bigger props will climb out better.

The 7.2v motor is not really ideal on a 3:1 box unless you can stretch to 3s lipo. Then its nice on 8x6 8x8 or 9x6 or 9x7 sort of props.

Hi Everyone

I took a break last night.

OK I think I will go along with PR's recommendation of MA 10X6 to 11X7 or anything within that size range.

I know I am thinking ahead of time but does anyone have a program to cut or print the insignia for "ACDC"? I hope to just give it to our local sticker store and get my decal cut or printed.

Still gotta figure out how to do the centre cabanes. I thought of using 2 mm carbon instead of the spruce quoted. I do not have spruce that size and if I desire a scale look it would even be smaller section. My wire bending skill is lousy so I will try carbon.

I am grateful for all the replies and words of encouragement.

"Ho" that is a nice looking Tiger there. What did you do about the carbanes? Did you follow the plan?
