Well lets see, depending on what kind of car you are looking for, check losi, team associated, x-ray, and mugen seiki (not neccasarily in that order).

Noooo. Tamiya is one of the oldest car model brands. I always dreamed to have one of those Tamiya Mini 4WDs when I was little, but they were too expensive.

Tamiya does have a legacy as more fun related cars, with less racing ambitions, although later cars have matured in that aspect, like the famous Avante, although big racing successes in the off road scene were scarce, if I remember well. Still, especially in the Drift and Touring Car scene, with the TT-01 chassis for instance, that have a large user base.

Kyosho seems to address a limited public these days, mostly fans of their refined techniques as for instance in Europe the parts are priced almost double compared to Japan or the USA, making them a less interesting choice there.

Most of their cars are race oriented, with focus on handling and light construction, trying not to sacrifice durability in the process. I have yet to encounter a Kyosho that doesn't at the first meters feel good right away, as for handling. Responsive, yet smooth. They offer some more fun oriented RTR as well lately, like the Sandmaster.

tamiya may have the best history, but not the best racers, or even bashers

Thanks for all the responses - I was actually wondering about people experts vs. brands.
