Motor and ESC combo
HI!
I just had a look at a 270kv motor and 160A ESC  Running on 12v it should give a max rpm of 3240. The prop on the Tug is a 95mm 4 blade, not sure of the pitch Would I be able to run this as a direct drive? Also looked at a 500kv motor that will need a reduction drive. From what I understand I should spin the prop 3000rpm maximum! So a 3 to 1 reduction will work well. What would the best choice be? And would they work? |

Hello.
For your model with a prop diameter of 95 mm you need not more than 1800/2000 rpm. Brusless motors (without sensor) get always problems to start slowly. Your Idee to use the 270KV motor is perfect but I advice you to use a beld drive 2-1. To reduce rpm at the prop shaft. For my model of the Maersk Topper I use also Brushless (420kv) and with a beld reduction of 5/3. (with a prop diameter of 2x 80mm) The only different is the Topper get working controlled pitch propellers, so the motor will only turning forward. I made my first test sail 2 weeks ago and with 2000rpm much, much to much power and speed. The ESC I use is max 55amp, but the motor will take max 10 amp each. Understanding some photos and video of the Drive units and CPP: (excuse for my bad englisch)

I cant open the video at work, will watch them the weekend I’d also prefer a reduction drive to give the tug more torque and to spin the prop more smoothly.  The 500kv at 12 V will give 6000rpm and with a 3 to 1 reduction I’ll have a maximum of 2000rpm theoretically. So with prop load I should get about 1500 to 1800rpm. I’m busy sourcing the pulleys and belts I need to build the reduction system, so will hopefully start building the drive soon! |

How big is the ship? Size and weight? The 10A load... was that at maximum power in the water???  The 10A seems very low? If thats is the case then we can use smaller (cheaper) ESC...  Sorry for many questions.. Boatracer and me is very new to ships...  Thank you George |

hello george.
The model is 146cm long and weight about 48 kg. About the power, I don't know, At least much to much, At scale the bollard Pull mast be 1,44kg, but without reduce speed in the ESC ist about 8 kg. The motor will be use 10 amp because of the reduction and working CPP. My goal is to sail the hole day at 4 batteries of 12 volt 12 amp each. gr leen
