1/24 Whaleback Freighter

Hi all,
Just sharing my new project. It's patterend of of an 1890's whaleback freighter
original length 336-360' Breath 42' Depth 24" . I'm not sure I'll go with 13' long or go up to 15'? 15' feet would be 360' She will be sheathed with 28ga steel.
I'll post as I can
Eric.

Mark (the goon) likes 'em big so I can imagine he is salivating over this one!

Where do you hail from Eric?

I don't have quite Tregurtha1013's enthusiasm for whalebacks but they are cool. The last surviving one is the SS Meteor. She is a museum ship at Barkers Island, Superior Wisconsin. I toured her many years ago. Dug out some photos from an album of interior shots. Was back up there in 08 and shot a couple of exteriors from a park nearby.

Meteor was built in 1896 as the Frank Rockefeller. She ended her sailing days as a tanker. Whalebacks didn't catch on as their hatch openings were too small for the new Hulett unloaders.

I hope you have a fair sized body of water for your model to maneuver in. A club member who passed a few years ago built a model of the John Ericson. He hated the way she steered "like a log".

What I see of your build so far is top notch. I think Capt. McDougal would be pleased.

Hi all,
Ya I have a weekness for big boats. I'm live in the Keewenaw Penninsula near Eagle river, about 4 miles from Lake Superior, fun to float my boat in.

I would LOVE to run steam in my boats but money is short right now, so for now they are kid powered-Big and small.

I'll be cutting the edges of the frames to fit the contour then installing cross frame stringers as hull siffeners and nailing strips.

I've drawen out the bow frames on the ply wood and hope to cut them out soon.
then see if they fit right as I'm working off of Pictures and rough dimentions.

I'll post more as I get more done

Eric

Thanks Prins Willem for the pictures and advice, I have about 44 miles of lake to play with so turning shouldn't be to much of a problem. Right now I don't have a radio for this or my other freighter-Soon.
Thanks Eric

Eric,
Very ambious project.
This should be fun to follow. Steel sheathing? Don't forget the zincs, or rather ... well check into it. I can't remember what is used as a fresh water "zinc"
