What size heli, 450 or bigger

I have a mini cp and honey bee king 2 currently.
Now I want a nice quality larger heli, but cant decide if a 450 will be big enough over the king 2 or go 500/550 size?

What you think would be the best size?

I dont fly 3d cause im not good enough, yet, but want to get there one day. Currently its just the odd loop on the king 2.

I think everybody in the heli hobby should have a 450. Their great trainers for the larger sizes in that the crash cost is super cheap. Yes the larger 500-550's are more stable, But master a 450 and the larger sizes will be a snap to fly. I also think if going with a 450 bare bones kit, one should wire it up for 6s over 3s.

The pro's of skipping a 450 and going with a 500. A 500 is not much more in crash cost. Better stability, A larger model helps keep track of flight orientation, More ohhhhh's and ahhhhhh's from your pal's.

Skip the 550's for now. Crash cost is that of a 600 size heli, -IMO- get real good with the first two sizes then move up to the larger. **the cost of a 550-700 re-kit suck**

+1 on the 500 deja, Crash cost is low and they are very nice to fly.
Getting my blade tracking finished today on my 600E. Not going to mess with the 90 nitro birds till I get back from Mexico

Me getting off topic here. WOS: What 600e do you have ? Fb or Fbl ? I crashed my align 600e hard core a few months ago, And rather then doing a re-kit i picked up an align 550..Never thought i would miss that Pig 600e. But i am starting to. It was very trustworthy in flight till that damn head link pop'd in flight..... It was a great no dirt nap, light 3-D heli for nearly 3 years. To do over again i would prolly go with the chaos 600e in T.T on 8s

aluminum 600E FB Head!
Everything on it is all align genuine. I just bought a barebones complete frame assembly and it is the exact same 600E.
Got a FBL Head?

Yes crash costs are a factor. Though i hope not to crash a lot as practiced on my smaller helis.

Maybe ill pop to a shop to see some size comparisons. Its hard to tell from pics online.

My vote goes for a 500 size heli. Am gettin to damn old for all those little damn screws and parts on a 450. Now I have a trex 600, trex 700 and raptor 90. NO MORE ITTY BITTY OH CRAP WHERE DID IT FALL PARTS!

That would depend. Can you fly all over the place up to 20 meters every day for a week and not crash? If you can, and you haven't dumb thumbed for a week, or atleast have been able to recover from a mistake, it doesn't matter what heli you get anymore. If you can react fast enough to recover from a dumb thumb on a micro, you can save a larger heli.

I too want larger helis but 450 is the perfect size, not too small not too large and cheap enough to make mistakes on, even if you buy Align. I am into 450's now and eyeing 550's but wow, the price jump, even if you go clone it's still hundreds of dollars in parts. Battery cost being the worst, I want no part of 12s batts and the charger to go with it. 6S batts are expensive enough.

I vote 450.

Just sayin, the king 2 is like only 1 1/2 inches shorter than a 450 and it has 275mm blades. You could just extend the boom.

This is a very good point. I always tell people to come up with the highest they can possible put in the hobby, chop that in half, and that's your price range. The other half goes to spare parts and tools for maintenance, which is actually rather specialized and considerable.

Budget. Well a 450 is no problem. I think 500 is fine, but as others have said, the 550 plus size are very expensive. 600 and above is a no no for me. I can afford the out lay, its the keeping it going cost that would hurt.

If a 450 is only a little bit bigger than my king 2, its probably not worth getting one. I could go down the second hand route on an 500/550, there seems to be a few around.

Though a quality 450 will fly much nicer then my king 2.

I hate making decisions, lol

600s arnt as much as you think up keep wise the big cost in a crash is blades
but the out lay to start with is higher
my 6HV was ~1200 USD and cash will cost ~200 bucks with blades
my 500 was close to 800 up front and costs around 100 per crash with blades

also what radio do you have i would would work in a good radio if your still using what came with the Honey Bee King

I have a futaba ff9 which i use on my planes and king 2. Didnt like what came with the king.
