Airfoil template plotting software for Mac OSX 10.8.2

Hy guys,

Not sure if Im right here, when not, please put it to the right place.
As the title says, Im looking for a software for plotting airfoil templates to cut foam cores. I used to do this with macfoil but since I upgraded to Mac OSX 10.8.2 it doesnt work anymore because Powerpc programs are not longer supported.
Does anybody know an alternative? Can this also be done with XFLR5?

Sorry for my poor english.

Thanks!

Airfoil template plotting software for Mac OSX 10.8.2

I bought MacFoil 2 years ago and received a somewhat surprised but grateful email reply from the creator. I understood from him that it was a project that he hadn't touched for a long time. He was happy that someone was still interested and willing to pay for it.

I will look for his email address. Like you, Koarl, I have the same problem. I will see if his address is still good. If so, I will pass it on to you and anyone interested. Perhaps if there is enough interest, then the creator might want to update MacFoil.

Let us see what happens.

Hi Koarl:

Thanks for your patience. The following is from an email I received dated 25 July 2011:

Dear MacFoil customers,

Unfortunately, MacFoil will NOT work under Apple's new operating system, Lion (version 10.7). Furthermore, there are currently no plans to update MacFoil for the latest system. So I'm afraid MacFoil will soon be relegated to the growing pile of "old programs that only work on old computers."

I suspect that I will release the source code into the public domain, so that if some enterprising young Mac programmer and aircraft modeler wants to take the time it can be reborn. Or perhaps after I retire I'll take the plunge myself.

One last bit of news: the MacFoil website will be disappearing soon as well (I canceled my contract with Earthlink). Sometime in the future, it will probably appear again at www.chenerystreet.com (but that will require a free weekend with nothing better to do...a very rare event these days).

Thank you all sincerely for finding MacFoil valuable enough to actually pay a little money for: I can't imagine a better reward for writing it.

Dave Johnson

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Hopefully "There's more than one way to skin a cat." Good luck.

I got a reply from Dave Johnson last weekend:

Hi Robert,

Well, I have to say that's nice to hear: people still want MacFoil now and then!

I have no problem you posting my email in the R/C groups forum, maybe there's a mac programmer among the flyers who wants to take it on!. (The website is still, basically, nothing, so that won't help anyone... :-)

Which forum is it? Maybe I should join for a bit.

Thanks for the note, it made my day!

Dave

What's the exact use case for the program? Do you just want to print airfoils from DAT files?

I've been using a bunch of Tcl script to plot my airfoil as PS files (which can then be converted nicely to PDF). It doesn't have much of a UI at the moment but I can whip up something usable by the end of the week. Are you comfortable with the shell? (BTW, what's the default shell on the Mac these days? Is it still tcsh or has Apple moved to bash?)

Tcl is cross platform and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux (as well as a bunch of other OSes including Cisco routers). So the program can potentially be useful to a lot of people.

using power PC & older mac software on new macs

I came across this thread via a Google search & was amazed that I might have something to contribute.

For those of you with older software & new macs, you might want to take a look at Sheepshaver. <http://sheepshaver.cebix.net/> It's an open source PowerMac emulator using mac OS 7, 8 or 9 that runs within mac OS X (I'm currently running OS 9 on top of 10.7.5).

I found an old copy of macFoil (v 1.5.2) & it seems to run OK within Sheepshaver. I didn't do anything with it other than to start it up, make sure the menu items could be selected & verify that some buttons worked. (I'm not an RC-guy, so I didn't know how to load an airfoil data set. So I can't verify that the plotting works.) One of you pros will have to take it from here.

Best wishes,

Hey guys,

sorry for my late answer, but I was busy with my woodie built...

@slebetman: Yes, the use of the program is mainly printing dats, but also modifying the thickness, camber, wire kerf and sheeting comensation etc.
Short: templates for cutting wing cores by a hot wire are made with this tool.

Im not that good with programming and stuff, what your describe is like a foreign language to me...

@thadolius: I already found sheep shaver, and that could by the solution. But how to hell can I download it??

Thanks

Slebetman, What I would like to be able to do is take a data file (.txt format) and plot the resulting airfoil and then be able to import it into a CAD program, specifically TurboCAD for Mac.
I have included the data file for a ClarkY airfoil below your quote.
