Build Log
25" Downeast Tuna Boat

Hello all,

I've been using these forums as a great source of reference for my current scratch build of a Downeast style tuna boat. It isn't as pristine as most of the other builds on here, but for my first scratch build in many, many years I like the way it came out. I used a set of scale drawings for a 42 Wesmac and made some templates off of that.

It's constructed of balsa and basswood with four layers of west system epoxy over that. I should have fiberglassed it, but I could only find heavy glass cloth locally and didn't feel like ordering off the internet at the time. The finish could have been a lot better if I glassed it, but I'll do that next time.

Here are some build pictures.

More pictures, with bonar box:

Ready to fish:

The roof and forward cabin roof are removable to access the electronics.

It's too fast for scale at full throttle, but at 3/4 throttle it runs very realistically. I have a 3000kv brushless engine in it turning a two blade 1 3/4" prop. Pleased with the performance without any tweaks and not a lot of experience setting up the running gear!

Thats very cool! We built a 46' wesmac at work which is almost identical to a 42', only difference is the 46 had 4' added to the stern which helps get the bow down more. Nice work, I want to build a model of the boat we built one day! She does 35kts wot!

Thank you!

What power is in it to do 35 knots?! I think most cruise around 20.

I run a 23 Regulator in real life and figure I might as well build a model Wesmac since I can't afford the real thing.

I also shot a short video when I did the sea trial:

To tell you the truth, the bigger motor helps. At 24-25kts I think it runs around 17-1800rpms where most would be running around 17kts at that rpm.
The motor will definitely last a LONG time since the load on it is much less than normal. She does pretty good on fuel
