Question
DLE 20 comparison to Glow 1.20 two stroke or 1.5 FS

I have a Seagull Gee Bee Super Sportster 71" wingspan ARF I am starting to assemble. I am trying to determine if a DLE 20 will be enough power. It fits 1.20 mounts and would work in the plane but I do not want to be too underpowered. The specs call for a 1.2 two stroke (glow I assume) or a 1.5 cubic inch four stroke. Since I have never run those sizes in glow engines, I am at a loss for the difference in thrust developed. The plane is supposed to weigh in around 11 pounds.

I think the DLE 20 would work but would rather not do the trial and error thing.

I have a dle 20 on a nitro models ultimate weight is right at 10 lbs. and allot of drag from the 2 wings but the 20 really hauls it around nicely ! I would compare the power closer to a 150 f/s. Have settled on the 17x6 xoar. can't remember what it turns...... Thinking low 8s. you should be fine.........hmmmm just had a thought........ Unless you come out tailheavy!!!!!!!!!! The 20 will put out around 14 lbs of thrust so you will be able to go straight up !! As long as the all up weight is 11 lbs. I was raised in montana !!!!!! "Big Sandy" small world !

Thanks for the info! I was thinking the DLE 20 might be OK but I what little comparative information I have been able to find so far was not much help. It may come light on the nose, but I think that can be dealt with; prefer to add useable weight if it is needed though. Move everything forward first if possible.

Montana is a great State; if a little cold in the Winter. Lots of good people are from here. Thanks again!

That DLE will eat up any 120 glow. It has as much power as alot of 26 cc gassers

This info helps a lot! I appreciate the response.

I am moving ahead with the DLE 20 and am now optimistic that the performance will be what the plane needs.

If you're too concerned put a 30 or 35 in it? You're only talking about another 8oz or so? That move would let you up into the 19 and 20" prop sizes vs. the 20's limit of about 17"?

Yes I agree with that. The DLE 30 would pull that plane around like a rag doll

I'll take a look at the 30 and see if mounting will fit without too much modification. But the Gee Bee is a racer and I guess a guy can always throttle back a little more to save the frame if the 30 does pull it around like a rag doll.

It sounds like the 20 is probably enough, so I'll have to think some more. Decisions, decisions...

Thanks for your input!

How did it fit? I just bought a DLE 30 and have an AT-6 by Seagull and was thinking of putting it on that plane....My Seagull Gee Bee Z has a Saito 180 and has a lot of power for that plane!

More than a SPE26, CRRC 26 red barrel and CRRC 26 rear carb. Similar to a 180FS on glow, bit more than a 180FS on petrol - from personal experience!

A little Gem of a powerhouse which will fly a 71" monoplane no problemo.

Only thing is the huge cowl on the Gee Bee! 18" prop is maximum (too big really) for a 20. Also I doubt that weight at the front will be a problem, so a bigger lump should be an easy fit.

EDIT:- I just watched a review with a Saito 180 and 16*8 prop - plenty of power. Dle20 should be fine.

So would the DLE 20cc work on a CGM Bucker Jungmann? I'm leaning, but still cautious.

On youtube I seen a video of a 150 4 stroke powering it.So the dle 20 will pull it around very nice, but if you want unlimited vertical and lot's of power get the DLE 30.

My DLE 20 should be here any day. I got a frank bowman ring coming for it as well.
I put a frank bowman ring in my DLE 30 and it gives me 20 lbs of thrust.
I'm going to also do the reed block mod as well.
