This was made in Belgium in 1958, the year of the World Exposition in Brussels. In the Russian pavilion there was a Sputnik hanging from the ceiling.
I was 8 years old. By pure chance I found this item, base is still made out of bakelite with winding mechanism inside so when you turn a know you can hear some blip-blip chicking with some interval and then again blip-blip, remember hearing that on the radio ?

Indeed I do....!...I was about 9 years old, following this with great interest.
That particular morning (1957), after hearing the beeps on the radio, I recall beeing so exited that I ran cross the field to my neighbor playmates, telling them the great news.....what an anticlimax it was to get the reply: "Oh, and wozasputnik..?"

One of my favourite tracks - used the name for a whole series of my designs, the first six were 1/2A F/F power models, the last three standard class thermal soarers. Below is Telstar V from the early sixties, which gave me a lot of contest successes. I also had a series of TD.09 open power models named after the Tornado's follow-up hit to Telstar - "Globetrotter".

One of my favourite songs as well and let me tell you a little story about the producer of that song, Joe Meek, he did have his studio close to the then world known model shop 308 of Henry Nichols in Holloway Road London, the studio was at 304. All those echo sound effects were obtained in Joe's bathroom, there were no fancy whatever-sound-you-want electronics in those days. Joe was paranoid, ended up shooting down his landlady after which he killed himself.

Joe Meek also developed some electronics to realize his visions of cool sounds...
By a chance (!) an old Joe Meek compressor lives in my home made rack of gizmos for home recording....soon to become vintage as well...

I would guess that those are both old radio receiver sets there. Nice find Reginald.

Here is a nice vintage video of rubber band powered airplanes from around the world back in the 1930's.
