Mix.n.Match Datsun - Sakura Zero S

I received a free, new, Traxxas 12T Titan and XL5, so I decided to build something for the road on a budget. Being the owner of a couple of 1:1 Datsun's, I wanted an RC version. I researched and purchased the Sakura Zero S kit, and purchased a 1/10 Tamiya Rally 240Z body kit. Then I purchased a BRE Scheme decal set from ABC Hobby, a Savox servo, and an Rx.

I have been feverishly assembling for the past few days. So far so good. On a relatively small budget, I have a really cool car. I know it would have been easier to buy a "canned" Datsun kit, but it's a hobby isn't it?

Here are some photos:

Hopefully it will look something like this after I throw paint at it.

Thanks!

I finally got the paint and steady hands, together for the final prep and paint. I am really happy with the results. Now I need to find a place to drive it, and learn the ropes of RC road car driving. I have a cheap body I will use for bashing it around. I don't want to wreck this one.

I thought you're not gonna run with that body!

FYI those stock tires are really soft and won't last long on asphalt..

I'm not gonna CRASH with that body. I won't run that body while in attack mode. The new attack body will be ready in a couple of days. The tires are already half way to slicks after one battery. I'll change them when the foam leaks out.

BTW. What tires do you suggest for just bashing it around the asphalt?

Thanks!

I just painted another body that I won't mind bashing too much. Although, I wish it didn't turn out so nice....here we go again. hahaha.

Sweet, that chrome looks great! What brand did you use?

My Mazda Furai and Ebbro 350R bodies are pretty beat up now.. good thing I just got two new bodies in the mail today

Gonna have to decide on paint schemes for both. I might try doing a CF on light blue theme on the 07 NSX and an almost full bright orange theme for the Lexus LFA. decisions decisions...

Oh well, here's what mine looks under the hood. Actually a little different now that I changed to heavy duty outdrives in the front and reduced my FDR for a bit more top end.

Found an old pic of the Mazda

Very nice. Loving all that alloy! The mazda looks great. I think CF on light blue would look perfect on the NSX.

For the chrome, I used Spas Stix mirror chrome. Unfortunately, I backed it with Spas Stix black, which clearly said on the can, "Do not use over mirror chrome." oops. So the front end of the car is bare Mirror Chrome, and the chrome fades to satin chrome where I faded the black paint. I realized the chrome was turning into satin, so I stopped at the front. It kind of looks like a cool effect anyhow.

Mirror Chrome needs a water-based black paint.

I just picked up a Trinity D3 17.5T and a 120A ESC with boost, and USB tuning. I can't wait to get them in the Sakura. Not sure what I can do for pinions using the stock motor mount. I know I will need in the 36-40 tooth range. It looks like you have your belts swapped, so you are running the vert motor mount?

All the alloy is mostly for bling, though a big bonus for me is that they're far easier on the screws. Since I got the alloy parts installed, I haven't stripped a screw when doing maintenance.

You're gonna be limited on pinion and spur choices with the stock MM for sure, it's a PITA to get to the motor screw through the holes in the spur. With the stock spur and stock MM, I think a 27t or 28t pinion is about the highest you can go before losing access to the motor screws. I used a 25t with the stock MM before and I was already struggling to reach them.

Yea that's the V2 Vertical MM, though there's the V3 out now which includes the opposing layshaft support I believe. Well worth the trouble of modding to use the VMM, makes maintenance a breeze.

I tapped every single plastic hole during assembly, but when I got to screw in the aluminum bits, it was like a Caribbean vacation. I should look into the VM before I start messing with the new motor, and play pinion wars.
