Gentle Lady Hinge - which to use - nylon hinge or film covering hinge
Am building a standard Gentle Lady, not powered, ad the plans for the rudder and elevator hinging call for either using film covering as a hinge or a "conventional hinge if preferred". How to choose?

Book binding tape or "blenderm" tape also work very well.

Tape is quick, easy, and durable. I use 3M #190, which Ace Hardware sells. Comes in clear, white, and the primary colors.

My original GL is still flying 20 years later. Original film hinges still going strong.

Quick tip... If you don't want to use film hinges (personal preference?) look in the nearest FedEx drop box or station and grab a FedEx pack, not a letter, but the pack. It's made of Tyvek and is very durable and thin.

Built mine in the early 80's. After a rest period of 24 years electrified it 2 years ago. The monokote rudder hinge failed with minor damage, luckily. Had flown well over the years up till then. Replaced it and the elevator hinge with Dubro pin hinges. I liked the monokote hinges better, but did't want to encounter any more repairs. I think the Monokote works well, but needs to be examined often for possible wear or deterioration. I like some of the above ideas as well.

+1 for 3M #190, but use the clear, it just seems to have better attributes for hinging. I have used this on unlimited ships with great results.

If you are concerned about the covering film peeling, you can use a laced hinge method which is very secure.
