Oculus #19 and Aspire Rebuild

I've kind of challenged myself here because in addition to starting an MM Glidertech Oculus, I also have on the bench a rebuild of a "basket case" E Spread Tow Aspire. Because I started the Oculus first and I think it'll take much longer to put together I'm focusing all the grinding, cutting, sanding time on that plane. For the Aspire I'm still in what you might call the contemplative phase of the project.

If we're keeping score or taking stock or something as of Feb 17th Mar 17th here's the progress on each plane:

Oculus
Center Wing section 80% complete
Outer Wing sections 90% complete
Tip Wing sections 90% complete
Fuse not started
Rudder not started
Flying Stab not started


Aspire
Damaged Right Wing Tip: Foam 95% sanded, one more pass of finish epoxy and micro balloons on some slightly loose areas.
Lightly Damaged Center Panel: Contemplative Phase
Damaged Fuselage: The main break is now done, the nose needs some reinforcement
Servos bought are Airtronics 761s for flaps, elevator, rudder, 809s for ailerons, hardware acquired and drive system is basically in place but I'll need a matched spinner from Kennedy.

Progress on the damaged right tip. Foam was found on the side of the road, 2.5 lb/cu ft. Epoxied in and hand carved and sanded. Still some finish sanding required.

Aspire Fuse Splinted with Carbon Sock & 1/64" Plywood

Maybe this was overkill for ALES but I figured I wanted both inside and outside surfaces of the Aspire fuse to be bonded and braced with carbon sock. For those that haven't seen a broken Aspire fuse (well this one anyway) they have an inner and outer layer of carbon sandwiching a honeycomb perhaps 3 mm thick. This is obviously both a super strong and super light way to work with the materials, but fixing it correctly meant that I had to try to blend in patches for both that inner and outer layer of carbon. The outer is obviously going to be a little bulgy in terms of the original fuse shape but I hope to smooth that out with a bit of sanding or perhaps some selective use of shrinkable covering like Monokote.

This is a picture of my Aspire in our club contest Saturday before I decided to go shoot some landings today.....putting a fist size dent in the spread tow leading edge of the left center panel with my beefy shin. There will be one more pink patch on it if you happen to see it at the Polecat. Oh and my shin is OK so don't be makin' any plans to throw me in the fire with the pig.

Gavin likes to call it the Expire, I'm beginning to think he's right.

All up weight before landing practice damage

Total weight = 2.153 kg = 76 oz

And it flies pretty sweet at that weight in all wind conditions. In "dead air" it will do about 10 minutes off a 200 meter high launch.

Repairs to the center panel

Here's the quick repair I did in between flying at a club contest and getting ready for the Polecat. I also added some lipstick on this pig by putting some ultracote lite over the repairs to hide the fuse and wingtip... and now center panel gashes. It passes the 20 foot test. The plane also looks especially awesome a couple thousand feet away from you.

I'm sure this repair added a bit of weight to the plane. I forgot to show it in the pictures but there is a layer of 1 oz glass added on top of the foam and adhered with 20 min finish epoxy.

By the way, the plane has Airtronics 809 servos for the elevator, rudder and ailerons and Airtronics 761 servos for the flaps. Very little buzz compared to JR servos, definitely light weight and everything moves with authority. Maybe just because the flap servos are new but there's less slope in them compared to some of the older JR digitals I'm accustomed to like the 368.
