However, out of curiosity I'm googling various solid state Gyro's and price results are not encouraging:

$129.99 for the one. This is significantly more expensive than a combination GPS module and accelerometer. I'll keep looking.
That's a really very expensive unit, I found some for less then $30,-

Just an FYI in case you didn't know, but you can actually add additional serial ports to a regular arduino using the SoftwareSerial libary and 2 extra I/O pins for each additional serial port. Although there are some limitations... if using more than 1 serial port, only 1 can receive data at a time. I think in your case you may be better off with the Mega. Anyway, the info is here: http://arduino.cc/en/Reference/SoftwareSerial

I presently use the SoftwareSerial libary for communicating to the MP3 player over 9600 baud. I use the Arduino UNO's built-in serial port for communication to the LCD screen.

Got links?

I could only find 3 axis accelerometers at that price range, and they are not gyroscopes

It's already in my build log, needed to reinstall my internet browser and I still need to manually replace my bookmark list, right now I only have the link in file.

For the cheap accelorometer/gyro option, you can always check the Multirotor section. I have a MultiWii board and a KK2.0. Hobbyking has quit a lot to choose from in all kinds of price ranges. For example:
http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...DSM2_Port.html

or:
http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...rol_Board.html

Both for less then 30 dollars. The ports can be read/written to by Arduino or other microcontrollers.
