Build Log
55mm Sabre

OK ...I decided to use the 55mm unit left from 1st Ronin in a Sabre. Always loved this plane. No good plans anywhere, so this is a real scratch build. SloperJoe did a box-build like it and it waas SWEET! Taking his lead and just using some pics for guidance. It will be 25"WS , 25" long. 55mm w/ 3000kv and a 11.1V 2200mah going through a 45A esc w/seperate Bec. Guesstimate weight is 1-1/2 to 2 lbs . Ails and regular elvs. Carbon spar in wing and balsa leading edges all round.

I was just thinking of doing a 50mm size "Box Frame" Mig-17 or F-86, only I was thinking of using a 7800KV motor coupled with a SkyAngels fan unit.
have the motor and fan now on a 25amp ESC, and running 1000-1300mah 2s 40C pack.....REALY good thrust, 10,000 rpm or so more than the stock motor with one less cell to carry and about the same amp draw as stock, and it is VERY LOUD on a static run
this is my new experiment, and so far it looks promising.

Hey SloperJoe..how far back ,or forward did you place unit? I was looking at having the leading edge of unit at the rear edge of wing. I saw where you had fun trying to get CG set as plane was tailheavy.

When I design my models I put the fan at the front of the fan at the trailing edge of the wing and never had problems with CG. I think you will be happy with this location.

I put it right behind the root trailing edge, the plane didnt have a CG problem....I did ,for some reason I thought I had to have a nickle glued to the tail end for balance...after several tosses and battery adjustments I realized I really didnt need it, once I popped the nickle off the tail it flew great

The Aeo OR Gws 55mm with the Adh300 motor @4300 kv .. Will work 'fine'.
When / if you need mo' go, use a 4S battery.

Progress on Sabre: All leading edges and hinge areas got balsa. Carbon spar installed and first coat filled. Took some pics of rough idea. Gonna go w/servo for each ail and elv.

Just put my order in for the Subterrain. My LHS did have it, but not some of the other items I wanted. Even at that, I will have it before I"m ready for it!

Sanding ..the necessary evil! All control surfaces sanded to airfoil. Wingtips got final cut , shape and sanded. Yes washout too ! Adjusted tail section a smidge, slid it back a bit on fuse. Sanded and shaped interior ducting for intake and exhaust.

Today's progress and headaches: Ails and Elevs hinged & sculpted the heck out of the canopy! Now where to fit all this stuff?!?!!?? (Not ESC that will be used.) I'm thinking of hollowing out the botttom of the canopy to hold batt. The ESC will be behind fan gettng the exhaust flow. The wiring haness won't be long , but will be tricky to confine.
